Personally, I've used both. I learned how to use GIMP first, so using Photoshop was very difficult for me in the beginning. Although I do like Photoshop and GIMP, I tend to only use GIMP for Coloring and Shading, while I use Paint.net for Icons, and Photoshop for everything else. If I had to put one as better than the other, I'd but GIMP first, although paint.net is pretty neat, that's for another topic Cool

I started out using PSP years ago to do some random things, so I was a little familiar with it, especially for editing...however when I started creating textures, I found gimp to be very basic and simple, I just seemed to be able to know what I was doing better, and why when I used it. So for me, I use both, it just depends on what I am using it for. Work with, whatever works best for you. If you have a program, learn on it, if money is a issue, Gimp is a great program. PSP, is very powerful and doesn't cost too much, and for me, I think Photoshop isn't really much better than the other too, certainly not for the price.

PSP in this case stands for Paint Shop Pro.
PlayStation stole the abbreviation years later.

Photoshop works best for me. I am a creature of habit and dislike change so perhaps I didn't give Gimp a good enough shot. I prefer the mass array of features with Photoshop as the options in my opinion offer greater results.

To be honest(TBH), I use both Gimp and Photoshop for some animation purposes that Gimp doesn't have versus the versatility that i would have on gimp since I've been using that program for a long while.

I was a photoshop user first for years. Initially I found gimp's interface frustrating. After a month of using gimp I find navigating it to be easier than photoshop. Both programs definitely have their benefits of use and of course theres always a matter of personal preference. For freeware I do feel gimp accomplishes alot.
