**Support Expectations: Any new project announcement will be monitored every hour over 48 business hours. Once a project announcement reaches 48 hours, the attention will be checked every 3 business hours until project reaches 72 business hours. After 72 business hours we check the thread ever 3 days until project is fully launched and we move onto a new project.**

***Please be respectful to others and only post a question that you have a concern with, and make sure its not already answered by the Q&A in the next post, thanks.***

Hi Everyone,

Very soon, IMVU will be opening up the Music Store to our General Audience. The Beta test we had with our V.I.P. members brought to light issues that we have addressed, and also make sure when we roll this out to everyone, that it gives a great experience.

The following is a recap of the original message we posted and a comprehensive Q&A which will follow this post:

1. You need the Release 404 to use this feature. Latest pre-release can found at http://www.imvu.com/download.php

2. There are four basic steps that you need to know to create and share your music

a. Buy your favorite songs in the catalog
b. Create your mix with songs that you own
c. Enter a public room or a chat
d. Submit your mix to the queue

More detailed information on the steps can be found here:
http://imvu.com/music/tutorial.php

3. There are some rules created that you should be aware of and have been have been created by the music industry lawyers to ensure that each user complies with the compulsory license.

Creating a mix -
o A mix will have a three track minimum; there is no maximum number of tracks in a play list.
o There is a maximum of two tracks from a specific artist, from a specific album or from a specific album compilation in any mix.

Playing your mix –

o More than two people need to be present in the room for music to play.

4. As you are buying songs, you may notice that some of your favorite artists are not there. Currently, there are over a million songs in the catalog including EMI and bands from the major independents labels. Over the next couple weeks, we will porting over Warner Music, Sony Music, and Universal into the catalog. Please be patient with us on this front.

5. Some users will also have the option to buy DRM-free MP3s that can be downloaded to computer so that you can play on your Ipod or MP3 player. Presently, this part of the service is only offered to US users only.

6. For those who make and copyright their own music, we are working on a way to get your products into this process.

7. Lastly, as an extra incentive we are still going to extend the 20% discount for all songs, for a limited time.

We look forward to all of your participation and questions.

The following is everything gathered from the previous discussion for this Q&A. Please review this post before asking any question so there is no overlap in questions.

Thanks

Q. Where is the Music Store? I can’t find it!
A. Highlight the Shopping tab at the top of almost any IMVU webpage, then click on Music Store.

Q. I bought music and it's not in my Inventory! Where is it?
A. Your music appears in the Music tab of the Flash Inventory of your 3D chat window, not your Messenger window. They are also listed under the Music tab of the IMVU homepage here: www.imvu.com

Q. Can we use promo credits or DTs to purchase music from the Music Store?
A. No. You must use real credits.

Q. When I try to preview a track I don't hear anything. Help!
A. Some content did not come with previews from the provider, so when you click on the Preview button for one of them we must create the Preview for it. The process takes several minutes, so the first time someone requests a Preview for a track that doesn't have one, it won't work immediately. If you come back later, it should be there.

Q. I see song titles marked as "explicit". Can minors hear these in chat if an adult plays them?
A. No.

Q. Does this mean the music in my Inventory will no longer play?
A. No. All products with a PID of 2658154 or less will continue to play as submitted. All products with a PID of 2658155 or greater will be limited to 20 seconds. The exception is streaming radio products, which are unaffected by this change.

Q. If I enter a Mix to be played in a room, but someone else has the same song(s) in it, will I hear those songs twice, playing with each Mix?
A. Yes. The Mix owner can remove their Mix from the queue at any time, and the room owner can remove any Mix from the queue.

Q. The previews only last 20 seconds. Am I buying the whole song?
A. Yes.

Q. I see song titles marked as 'explicit'. Can minors see these?
A. No.

Q. If I play my music in a room and the other person leaves, will my music stop?
A. Yes.

Q. Is there a tutorial on how to create and share my music?
A. Yes. See this link: http://imvu.com/music/tutorial.php

Q. Do I have to purchase a song every time I want to hear it?
A. No. It is a one time purchase only.

Q. How is the order determined in which the playlists are heard?
A. Mixes are heard in the order they are added. The Mix owner can remove their Mix from the queue at any time, and the room owner can remove any Mix from the queue.

Q. Why canʼt I hear the music when I'm alone?
A. This was a rule implemented by the music industry. There must be at least two people in the room.

Q. Does this only work in Public Rooms, or can I play my music in private chats?
A. You can listen to music in both Public Rooms and private chats, as long as there are at least two people in the room.

Q. Can I skip songs in the Mix?
A. No. This was a rule implemented by the music industry.

Q. How many Mixes can I create?
A. You can create as many as you wish. In addition, one song is not limited to just one Mix. You put that song in Mix 1, Mix 2, etc.

Q. Why can't I have a Mix with only two tracks?
A. You must have at least 3 tracks, with no more than 2 tracks per artist, album, or album compilation per Mix. These are requirements set by the music industry.

Q. I can't find my favorite artists, why aren't they on the list?
A. Currently, there are over one million songs in the catalog including EMI and bands from major independents labels. We will be importing music from Warner Music, Sony Music, and Universal soon.

Q. Can I put tracks from the Music Store on my Wishlist?
A. Yes! See here.

Q. I create and copyright my own music. Can I get added to the Music Store?
A. Yes! See here.

Q. I bought tracks, created a playlist, and downloaded the most recent version of the client, but my playlist doesn't show up in my music tab. What do I do?
A. Try clearing your cache by going to >Help >Tools >Clear IMVU Cache, then log off and back on.

Q. I have the AP, but I don’t want to see tracks marked ‘explicit’. Can I block them?
A. Yes. Go to your Account settings and look in the ‘privacy & safety’ section to change your options. By default, the viewing of explicit content is off.

Q. I'm a minor, I bought a song, but now it's marked 'explicit'. I can't hear it! What do I do?
A. Write in to customerservice@imvu.com and explain the situation. Be sure to tell them you are a minor.

Q. I’m an adult, but I can’t see the tracks marked ‘explicit’. Why not?
A. You will need the Access Pass to see these tracks. This can be purchased here:
http://www.imvu.com/catalog/newsletter/access_pass08.php

Thanks Rob! This was very helpful information. I was going to ask about those of us who create our own music, but I see that question is answered already. Thanks!

if they do this then music rings should be banned from being made and all refunded for music rings and take them all off. this is a much better way to listen to music with others. but the music rings will mess this up. but she is right anshe with the flashplayer is also a better way then music rings.

Any music products you already own that work now will still work in their usual way.

GuardianRob wrote:

I think it's a great leap forward, yet somehow there's still something about it that I just don't like.

Can't quite put my finger on it... =/

Wow... where do I begin. For starters, this is a double edge sword of an idea. Being someone who used to develop music, I see it as horrible. Looking at it from IMVU's point of view, they are just covering their own bum from being sued, I understand that.

From the music developers point of view, at least this ones, I can honestly say that this idea is horrible and I am entirely against it. By the time some of you are done reading this it may not seem that way but I am, and will explain as I go on. As a music developer with friends who are musicians and have made their OWN music that THEY have copyrights too, this is an outrage. I have to honestly say that I am more against this then I was the initial banning of, sorry, limiting the sound clips of, music and sound bytes. Having thousands of developers stop making music that IMVU was raking money in from so that they can start producing it the way that the RECORD companies want is ridiculous and an insult. I know for a fact there are a lot of underground artists on this site, I know several personally, I might even know some that I don't know that I know. A great way to put out your music if you are underground is to find someone to do it for you. IMVU would let them do it for PENNIES on the dollar and let thousands of people around the world hear them while still making money back. Is that not the basics of how you make money, sell a product or yourself? A band that owns its own copy right no longer is able to place their music here because the major record companies are throwing hissy fits. While it may not have been their initial intent, the Big 5 have managed to find another way to shut down up and coming artists, just like they do on the radio! It is ludicrous that the clients of IMVU, the people who ARE PAYING for everything here are being punished. Developers who used to sell items that had music attached would make IMVU so much money because IMVU gets a portion of that developers sale PLUS the developer that made the product that you derived from, part of their sale as well. Now that IMVU has this music store, they are not going to be making that much (prediction).

Reason number one why I say that, they are only putting out popular artists/songs. That means that there will be no more underground artists. There will be no more songs that are hard to find and unique, like those from other countries. Reason number two; they will not be making money on this, not much at all. Honestly think about it. As greedy as the record companies are about their money, there is no way IMVU is making more per sale on a song in their store then from the music developers. The grand total as far as an legal US tender goes that those songs cost it $0.88 United States dollars (for just the song on IMVU, if you wish for the MP3 as well, you are looking at $1.80 USD). The music company gets at least three- quarters of that I am sure, if not more.

I am fully well aware that they are keeping previous products in the catalog and that they can still be used, I appreciate that, especially given I have two accounts that I make music on. That does not excuse this action though and does not make this any better. Expect numerous boycott and anti-music store groups to appear, I know I am planning on it.

Now from the other side of the spectrum, I do understand why it was done. Everyone submits to the big music companies eventually when they are hounded and threatened enough. It was done to prevent suing and this way there is a nice compromise with it all. It doesn't make me agree with it, but it does cover your bums so that you guys do not have to fork forward a lot of money and have to start charging monthly (for Non-VIP) and raise prices etc. So yeah that is nice... not having prices go up on the rest of IMVU... I guess...

So I think that is a nice little rant and I will leave it at that... my fingers are sore now too... maybe I won't be able to make products... Not that I think that would matter... IMVU would just make them themselves anyway....

Ciao
KLC
