The Chinese Fur Trade
While fur coats may not often be seen on the high street, fur trim is high fashion. Everything from boots, to coats, even knitwear is subject to fashion's latest fad - fur. The fur has to be cheap and where does the fashion industry go to get cheap and plentiful supplies of fur? China of course. A recent report on the fur trade in China reveals that China is currently producing 1.5 million fox and racoon dog pelts annually as well as mink and even dog and cat fur.
China is a country without any legal provisions for animal welfare so it comes as no surprise that undercover investigators found routine abuse of the animals in housing, husbandry, transport and slaughter.
Most horrifically animals were routinely skinned whilst still alive and often while still conscious. Even when stripped of their skin some animals were seen to be still alive up to 10 minutes later.
Animal Abuse
The animal welfare organisation said cases in 2005 included a cat dying in a washing machine and a dog whose leg was sawn off by its owners.
Convictions for animal cruelty last year increased by a fifth to 2,071, compared with 1,700 in 2004.
Nearly 26,000 animals did not have access to water - an increase of more than 100% compared with 2004 - while about 35,000 were not getting suitable veterinary treatment, a rise of nearly 80%.
In one case, Holly Thacker, 34, from Norwich was sentenced to six weeks in jail for deliberately putting her cat Fluffy in a washing machine on a boil wash cycle.
In another case, an RSPCA inspector found a 10-year-old Shih Tzu called Gizmo was so badly matted after not being groomed or trimmed for more than two years that it was unrecognisable as a dog.
Animal Neglect
The most common type of animal cruelty is neglect or abandonment - that is, people not providing adequate care for animals in their charge. These types of cases often involve situations where an animal is left without food, water or shelter, or when proper veterinary care was not obtained. In many of these cases, the underlying reason can sometimes be explained by the caretaker’s ignorance. This is why many animal control officers and humane law enforcement officers will first attempt to educate the neglectful caretaker, rather than immediately citing them or arresting them. While ignorance can be blamed in some of these situations, an additional cause that seems to be a major contributor to neglect and abandonment cases is that the pet owner simply does not care. Even people with only the most basic knowledge of animal care can see that an animal has degenerated to the point where it is only skin and bones. Many times, animals are purchased as pets, and simply forgotten about. Animals in this situation however do not merely gather dust. They are slowly starved or dehydrated to death, literally bled dry due to parasite infestations.
