Cardinal Danneels spoke these words after the canonization of Father Damien on October 11th, 2009 in Rome.
“He inspires many people all around the world: people with no religion as well as people with all kinds of religions!
That everyone may let himself inspire by his charity and his courage to deal with, and work in, a hopeless situation.
That he may be of comfort for all the ones in hopeless situations!“
A relic of Father Damien will make a tour in the US:
Detroit, San Francisco and Alameda are cities that will be visited.
After that trip Mgr. Silva will bring the relic to Hawaii where it will be kept in the Cathedral of Honolulu from the 1st of November 2009:
Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace: noon, Mass with Bishop Larry Silva.
Iolani Palace: 2 p.m. interfaith civic ceremony with relic; speakers include Bishop Silva, Lt. Gov.
James Aiona and religious leaders.
After the ceremony at the palace, the relic will be carried back to the cathedral where it will remain
permanently.
