Customizing your Avatar
Using your inventory
It's really easy to use your inventory and customize your avatar! First, you need to open your inventory tab. See it right here above my head in the picture? You can dress your inventory tab on the IMVU client right next to the "Buddies" tab.
Once you've opened your inventory, you can click on the little triangles next to each category to see all of the items you already own. Take a look around... you might be surprised at how many things you already have! If you think a category might be missing, don't worry, that just means you don't own any of that type of item yet!
Okay, ready to change your outfit? Click the triangle next to "tops" and choose a dress. As soon as you click "put on", VIOLA! You're wearing the outfit.
Purchase outfits
Get MORE!
You're probably wondering how you can get more things for your inventory! You can visit the catalog and search through all of the thousands of items available. You can also click the link "get more" in your inventory next to the type of object you'd like to get!
I just clicked on "get more" next to hairstyles and there were over 50,000 different kinds of hair. Here are just a couple that I thought were pretty cool:
Starting a Scene
Rooms and Furniture
Changing the 3D scene where you are chatting is just as easy as changing your clothes! All of your 3D scenes are stored in your inventory as well. All you need to do is scroll down and click the triangle next to the Rooms and Furniture category - like I've done in the picture below. Once you've decided on what room you'd like to visit, just click the word "apply" and you'll be ready to go. You can even switch scenes while you are chatting with a friend and show off as many scenes as you'd like!
Creating a Wishlist
Add to wishlist
Want to give your friends a hint about what new inventory items you'd like? Whenever you see something in the catalog, you can click "add to wishlist" and it will appear right on your homepage!
Remember, it's never polite to beg anyone to give you stuff from your wishlist, no matter who they are. Not only is it annoying, but you can get reported and banned for begging. Besides, it's much more fun to see how generous your friends are without you telling them to be :-)
Avatar & Room Picture
Say "CHEEESE"!
Now that a lot of you found your FREE room and have started to deck them out you can show them off!
In case you haven't noticed, there's a new panel on your homepage called My Room where you do just that! Check out mine over to the right. It's pretty easy to do and here's how:
Step 1 - When you have your room open, there is a button on the bottom of the 3D window that says Take Snapshot. Make sure you are standing exactly where you want to in your room and click on this button.
Step 2 - When you click the Take Snapshot button you will notice a rectangular part of your window will be highlighted. This will be the part that ends up in the snapshot. There are two buttons that let you choose either a vertical picture...
...or a horizontal one. Click to take a snapshot. Clicking the red circle with the "x" will let you take another shot if you did't like the one you took.
*Note: You must choose the Horizontal format if you want to upload your room picture to your Rooms Panel on your homepage. Choosing the Vertical format will only allow you to upload the snapshot as your avatar pic.
Step 3 - Once you have a shot you like click on the Upload as Room button on the right hand side of your 3D window. Wait a few seconds then check out your homepage. Look for the My Room panel and you should see the snapshot you just took!

2. Click on avatars in the Cool New People Panel
3. Hop around homepages and leave messages
4. Search for People and See Who's Online, click here.

It's really important to fill out your interests in your interests panel so that people who are interested in similar stuff can find you! Click on any interest to find everybody on IMVU who shares that interest. And when you visit someone's page, be sure to check theirs out... who knows what you might have in common!
Find a Friend
Buds are the best!
If you're looking for some new friends, try clicking on "Find a Friend" in your 3D window:
Add your friends!
Is your friends on?
You may have friends and not even know it! Or, even worse, think someone is your friend but not realize that you haven't added them as a buddy!
Until you add someone as your buddy, they won't show up as your buddy on your homepage, or on your buddy list. But, if someone hasn't added you back, don't worry, they might not have seen your request, or might not know how to add you as a buddy! Just direct them to my page for all the friend finding info!
Getting Messages
Woo hoo! I love messages!
Love getting messages? You will be getting many visitors, sometimes it's a little hard to keep up with them all. Try to visit everyone's page and leave them cool message!
Until you add someone as your buddy, they won't show up as your buddy on your homepage, or on your buddy list. But, if someone hasn't added you back, don't worry, they might not have seen your request, or might not know how to add you as a buddy! Just direct them to my page for all the friend finding info!
IMVU does not allow chain letters. The ones that say "send this to so many people and hit F4" or whatever. They don't work and they will get you reported and banned.
My Wish List
Fill up your wishlist!
Another way to show your style! Fill up your wishlist with things you like from the catalog. You might be surprised by how generous your new friends are.
Besides, it's much more fun to see how generous your friends are without you telling them to be :-)
My Gallery
Styl's Style
Your avatar picture is the main way to identify yourself on IMVU but your gallery lets you show off all of your scenes, outfits and friends!
It's super easy to add pictures to your gallery, just click "Take snapshot" at the bottom of the 3D window, pose, and choose the size picture you want to take. Then, just click "upload" and your picture will automatically appear in your gallery! Don't just take it from me, JC has some great info about taking snapshots on her page too!

What is my Blog?
Blog is short for weblog. A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is "blogging" and someone who keeps a blog is a "blogger". Your blog can be updated as often as you like and those updates are immediately viewable by anyone visiting your homepage. The great thing about blogs is that they allow people with little or no technical background to update and maintain them.
What is this panel?
The contacting me panel allows other people to contact you when they visit your page. Although you obviously don´t need to contact yourself when you are on your own page, you do have several options when it comes to this panel. First up, you can hide this panel. If you choose to show this panel, you have a very clear idea of where it is going to show up when others visit your page. Depending on the location of this panel, it can be easy or hard to contact you. Also, if you know how to use HTML and CSS tags, you can replace the standard art supplied by IMVU with whatever art you choose.
What do the icons mean?
Clicking ´Start a 3D IM´ will send an invitation to chat in the IMVU 3D IM software. It will also prompt you to run the software if you do not already have it running.

Click ´Leave a message´ to leave a message in the my messages section of the homepage you are visiting. You can choose to have this message be private and/or even include gifts.
Click ´Add to buddies´ to send a buddy request. If they accept they will be added to your buddy list, and you can choose to display them in your buddies panel. This shows other people who your best friends are, allows you to quickly see if they are online or if there is anything new on their page, and more quickly invite them to chat in 3D.
Click ´Block´ if you want to block this person from leaving you messages, visiting your page and inviting you to chat in 3D.
Who are these cool new people?
These are people that have signed on in the last couple of days and also had some chats in 3D. Click on their profile pic to go to their homepage. Go on and give them some love: chat with them in 3D and welcome them to IMVU.
How do I add a buddy?
There are two main places to add someone to your IMVU buddies - the 3D chat software or their homepage. To add someone from their homepage just click the 'Add to buddies' link in the Contacting panel. That person will then receive a Buddy request. If they decide to accept they will become a buddy and you both will appear in each other's Buddies list. The buddy panel on your homepage shows the top 12 people from your buddies list. Use the 'view all' link to display your entire buddies list. Drag buddies you would like to show on your homepage Buddies panel into one of the top 12 positions in this list.

What is my gallery?
Your gallery is a place to store, manage, and edit your pictures. These pictures can be commented on or even sent in an e-card. There are currently two views to your gallery: albums view and images view.
Albums view - Your gallery starts out in albums view. Albums can store an unlimited number of images inside them. To create a new album, make sure you're in albums view and click "+ Create new album" at the top right. Then simply follow the instructions to submit the album. The thumbnail that displays for your album is automatically chosen from the images inside until you change it to another image - see "Edit mode" below.
Images view - To see the images inside an album, simply click the album, or click the "zoom in" icon on the bottom right of the album in the grid view. When browsing images, click the image or the "zoom in" icon to get an enlarged view at its normal size in a new browser window. You might need to disable popup blocking software for this to work. Click the "zoom out" icon to go back to albums view.
Navigation - You can see your albums and images both on the top, in a horizontal layout, and the bottom, in a grid layout. These represent the same information, and you'll notice that the same thumbnails are displayed in each. To move around the data, simply drag them around - dragging the top panel (top bar) only works horizontally while dragging the bottom panel (grid view) works both horizontally and vertically. You can also "throw" these panels by grabbing, dragging and immediately releasing the mouse - this is handy if there is a lot of content to navigate. In addition, you can click on the breadcrumb text at the top left to get back to an area you were at previously.
Edit mode - If you're logged in and looking at your own home page, you'll get an additional "pencil" icon in the icons area in both album and image modes. Clicking this icon will bring up an edit menu for either the album or the image that you're currently hovering over. Simply choose an item from the menu and follow the directions to edit your albums and images - you can delete, move, rename, and more, including making an image your avatar picture.
How do I upload a picture?
You can instantly upload photos to your gallery (without leaving your homepage) by clicking the 'upload image' link in your My Gallery panel. What are rankings?
If you like to know how you stack up against your fellow avatars, rankings are for you!
IMVU rankings
If you like to know how well you are doing, or how you stack up against your fellow avatars, rankings are for you! Why be content with fuzzy concepts such as friendliness and invitingness, when you can have a precise number?
Here is an explanation of the ranking types that IMVU measures so far:
 |
Friends - For now this is number of people who have made you a buddy (added you to their contacts) although soon we will be moving to two-way friendship where both people need to be in each others contacts. |
 |
Visitors - This is number of unique avatars who have visited your page. Visiting yourself doesnt count, and multiple visits by the same avatar don't either. |
 |
Gifts - This is number of gifts you have received, a measure of how much people like to give you stuff. Got a gift? Click here to find it. |
 |
Generosity - This is how many gifts you have given. At last, a chance to see if you are a giver or a taker in life! |
 |
Top homepages - This is your place in the Top 100 most visited home pages. |
 |
Top inviters - This is your place in the Top 100 most prolific inviters. |
 |
Top developers - This is your place in the Top 10 best selling developers. |
 |
Top reviewers - This is your place in the Top 100 most prolific reviewers. |
We have plans to add a lot more interesting stats and rankings, so watch this space. If you have any questions or suggestions please mail us at rankings@imvu.com.

What is my RSS?
RSS stand for Really Simple Syndication and is a format for sharing content among different Web sites for free. How does it work? A Web site can allow other sites to publish some of its content by creating an RSS document and registers the document with an RSS publisher. A web publisher can post a link to the rss feed so users can read the distributed content on his/her site. Syndicated content can include news feeds, listings of events, stories, headlines, movies, etc.
How do I add an RSS feed?
Adding an RSS feed is really simple. First, find a site that has an RSS feed for you to add. This is typically found by clicking on the orange, XML icon on that site. When you click on that icon, you are typically brought to a page that contains one or more RSS feeds. Copy one of those URLs and then click the 'edit' link in the My RSS panel on your homepage. On the new window that appears, you can just paste in the copied URL into the URL section at the top of the page and click the 'Save to My IMVU Page' button on the right. Other options on this page are for advanced users.
What is my URL?
Your URL is a direct link to your IMVU avatar homepage. Use it to tell your friends where to find you or to introduce yourself to somebody new! Sometimes, it is possible for people to get to your page using a URL outside of the standard URL. In case someone does arrive at your page this way, the My URL panel allows them to copy your URL for future visits.
You can also tell people about your homepage by adding the link to your other sites or blogs, your AIM info box, your Yahoo! Mail signature and your Hotmail signature. Click the 'tell your friends about your homepage' link in the My URL panel to learn more.
What is the interests panel?
This panel is where you keep a list of words that best describe you, stuff that you are interested in, people, music, etc that you think are cool. Each word that you enter is clickable. Clicking on a word takes you to a page showing other people that also have this word in their interests panel. For this reason it is best to choose words that are not too common. For example words like 'avatar' and 'cool' wont really say much about you. Try to think of specific words that describe you.
* Note: Each word is an interest. If you put 'I like chamber music' in your interests panel, that is actually 4 interests, none of them very ... interesting. Best to put 1 word 'chambermusic'.
Who are my visitors?
The people who show up in your My Visitors panel are the people who have most recently visited your homepage. You can click on their profile pictures to go to their homepages.
Why can I leave myself a message?
Haha - no, this isn't a bug. The reason this link is shown is so you don't put Stickers over it by accident. If you accidentally put a sticker in this location, people will not be able to click the 'Leave a message' link. If you choose to put a Sticker here, people can still leave a message via the Contacting panel...unless you put a Sticker over that too.
What do the icons under the pictures mean?
The icons underneath the avatar pictures are quick reference guides to see if someone is online (image) and if they have updated their homepage recently (image).
How do I start a 3D chat?
To start a 3D chat, just click on the 'Chat in 3D' link in the Contacting panel of the person's homepage.
Why do some people have "Guest_" before their name?
Everyone who registers for IMVU begins as a guest. When you pay the one time fee for your avatar name, the "Guest_" is removed and more options are available to you. Click here to purchase your avatar name.
What are gifts?
When you send a message to someone, you can also give them a gift. In IMVU, gifts are products from the IMVU catalog. These can be anything from Stickers to scenes to avatars to anything that can be purchased in the catalog. When you want to give a gift, you do so by including it in a message. You can give people gifts when you leave them messages on their homepage. Just click any of the 'Leave a message' links on their page and go to the Send a message page. In the Gift dropdown menu, choose a gift from the receiver's wishlist or from the standard list. You can add other gifts to this list by clicking on the 'add to giftlist' button on any product's info page. Another handy button on the same page is the 'add to wishlist' button which allows you to add any product to your wishlist. This helps others decide what to give to you when they want to give you a gift.
What is my wishlist?
Your wish list is the list of products from the IMVU catalog that you hope someone will give to you. This is quite handy for the person giving you the gift, actually, as they don't need to search for the perfect gift - you've already told them what the perfect gift is. It also helps cut down on gifts that you don't necessarily want. Clicking on the product image in anyone's wishlist panel will bring you to that product's catalog page so you can learn more about it.
How do I add gifts to my wishlist?
To add gifts to your wishlist, simply go to the info page of the product you want in the IMVU catalog and click the 'add to wishlist' button found on the bottom left.
What is this?
This is where you can show everyone who the most important IMVUer in your life is! To get started, click change and enter an avatar name and a special message you want the whole world to know. If things get rocky, you can click 'go it alone' and not have any special someone on display.
What is the 'who loves me' panel?
This shows you everyone on IMVU who has chosen you as their special someone, as well as what they had to say about you in their special message.
What is this?
The 'My Outfits' panel is where your recently saved public outfits are displayed. Public outfits are outfits that you have classified as 'for everyone' when saving the outfit. Visitors can try on these public outfits in the dressing room, and if they like one, they can add it to their shopping cart and buy any or all of the items in the outfit.
How do I add outfits to this panel?
In the IMVU 3D chat program, open a room window and dress up your avatar. Then type this exactly: *saveOutfit. Buttons for taking a snapshot will appear, and after you photograph your outfit you will get a web page where you can name and save the outfit. Recently saved outfits classified as 'for everyone' will appear in the 'My Outfits' panel.
What is this?
The 'My Groups' panel displays the IMVU Groups to which you currently belong along with some current activity from that group such as recent posts within the group and the name of the avatar who made that post.
What is this?
The 'My Videos' panel lets you play videos for visitors to your homepage. You can place one or more videos in this panel by getting "embed" codes from video sites like YouTube and pasting them into the custom HTML of the panel.
How do I add a video?
Just click the "edit" button in the upper right corner of the panel and select Edit Custom HTML/CSS. Then paste the code directly into the box and click save. Click on the Preview button in the upper right corner of your page to view your video.
Remember, putting too many videos on a page can make your avatar homepage take a long time to download!
Re-arrange panels :
Drag & drop panels
The panels on your homepage can be easily re-arranged using drag & drop within and between columns on the page.
Just hold the mouse down on a panel header and drag that panel to a new location. Other panels will move out of the way and the screen will scroll as needed. The panel may re-size itself as you drag between the narrower column on the right and wider column on the left.
Each panel may optionally be hidden from public view by clicking the edit button and then choosing hide or show.
Color Wheel:
Text Color Editor
As you hover your mouse over the circular color pattern called the color wheel, the left side of the color bar at the top of the window shows the new color. To set the text color, click the mouse on the color you want in the color wheel or set the color manually by typing its hexadecimal code.
To see what the new text color will look like on top of the current background color and/or art, look at the example section at the bottom of the panel. If you want to go back to the original color you had before opening the Text Color Editor, just click the ‘cancel’ button.
Background Options
The color wheel on the Background Options panel works the same way as the Text Color Wheel with one exception: it is possible to set your panel background to be transparent byt clicking the ‘set to transparent’ link.
You can set your panel’s background image by copy/pasting a URL from any existing web image into the top-most space provided in the window. Use the ‘Tiled image’ and ‘Non scrolling image’ check boxes for special browser effects in some browsers.
*Note: Background images will appear on top of background color. If you are editing color and dont see your changes, there may be an image in the way.
ADVANCED
The CSS field shows the CSS equivalent of your settings, additional CSS settings can be added here.
Border options
The color wheel for Border Options works the same way as the Text Color Wheel. However, in order to see the effect of the color changes, the 'Border width' must be set to '1' or higher.
This panel allows you to choose from various styles, widths, colors and padding. You can also apply your border styles to all panels by clicking the 'Apply to all panels' check box. Of course, you can still go in and edit each border on an individual basis.
Stickers
Cheap stickers and fun!
Stickers are a cheap and fun way to decorate your homepage. Just drag the stickers you buy out of your stickers panel and stick them anywhere you want!
When you purchase stickers or receive them as gifts, they appear in a special "stickers panel" that appears only in "Edit" mode. Drag stickers out of this panel and place them anywhere on your page or drag stickers back to this panel to remove them from public viewing.
Stickers are "attached" to panels whenever possible so that when panel contents grow or you move panels around, your stickers will remain fixed relative to the top left corner of each panel. Anyone can make and sell Stickers. Learn how.
Find stickers
Some stickers, can become misplaced on your homepage. To locate all your stickers, click the Find stickers icon. The Find stickers icon can be found on the toolbar at the top of your homepage. When you click the icon, a box will appear with all your stickers lined up in rows. You can hold the mouse over any sticker in the box to see it's actual location on the page. You can drag any single sticker from the 'Find stickers' box to re-position it and all others will be restored.
Custom HTML and CSS
Define colors, backgrounds, fonts, etc...
Each panel has an edit icon that allows text, HTML and CSS to be entered. This can be as simple as a few words or, for those who know how to use it, very elaborate, including HTML tags, media players, <style> tags with extensive CSS to define colors, backgrounds, fonts, etc.(NOTE: never use '<BODY> tags in these areas!)

Custom CSS can be very powerful and affect aspects of the page that otherwise don't have tools for modifying them. Consider the following examples:
<STYLE>
/* large avatar name title at top of page */
#avatar_name {
color:#00dd00;
font-size:2.0em;
font-family:cursive,Verdana,Arial;
}
/* header links */
TD.topmenu, .topmenu A:link, .topmenu A:visited, .topmenu A:hover {
color:#adff2f;
font-weight:bold;
}
/* 'aboutme_panel' header title font */
#aboutme_panel TD.paneltitle{font-family:"Alba Super";font-size:2.5em;}
/* 'aboutme_panel' body font */
#aboutme_panel_body {font-family:"Arial";font-size:0.8em;}
/* borders for all panels */
#aboutme_panel, #messages_panel, #music_panel, #blog_panel, #rss_panel, #url_panel, #contact_panel, #video_panel, #special_panel, #slideshow_panel, #updates_panel, #groups_panel, #tagcloud_panel, #outfits_panel, #room_panel, #stickers_panel, #collect_panel, #friends_panel, #visitors_panel, #cool_panel, #rankings_panel, #gallery_panel, #wishlist_panel, #dev_panel, #badges_panel {border: 3px dotted #FFFFFF;}
</STYLE>
Here is a set of style tags that allow you to customize your homepage header background colors and text/link colors. The new colors specified below are sharply contrasting and will allow you to see which tag is controlling each part of your header. To change how your header looks just modify the settings inside the curley braces e.g. { color: red; } and paste your new code into the Custom HTML and CSS form of your About me panel. (Use the edit menu on your about me panel to display this form)
<style>
#headerlite, #header { background: red;}
#header .left, #headerlite .left { color: white; }
#header .right, #headerlite .right { color: cyan; }
#header a, #header a:link, #header a:visited , #headerlite a,
#headerlite a:link, #headerlite a:visited { color: violet; }
#outernav { background: url(/catalog/web_images/bluedesert01.gif) repeat; }
#outernav { color: yellow }
#innernav a, #innernav a:link #innernav a:visited { color: lightgreen; }
</style>
Safe mode
Adding custom HTML to a page, if done incorrectly, can corrupt the page and make it unreadable. If this happens, try clicking this ‘Safe mode’ icon. The ‘Safe mode’ icon can be found on the toolbar at the top of your homepage. When ‘Safe mode’ is clicked, all custom HTML on the page is displayed as visible text intead of rendering it as HTML. This allows you to examine the custom HTML to find and fix errors.
Add a Background to Your Homepage!
Here's the how to information:

IMVU Safty
Be Smart!
Staying safe out there on the streets and staying safe on the internet both come down to the same thing. Being smart and being careful.
Sure, it's up to you to do whatever you want to have fun, but not if that means hurting yourself or anyone else! While using IMVU, it is your responsibility to act and behave in a manner that is respectful, courteous, and sensitive to the members of the IMVU community and to society at large. This means that you are not allowed to create names, post images, or use language that is nasty, insulting, sexually explicit, racist, disrespectful, offensive, or otherwise inappropriate. Pretty simple, huh?
List of Safeties
I'm not going to lecture you on safety, most of this stuff you've heard before. But if you're going out into the world of IMVU and the internet, I've got some advice for you.
Avatars aren't always who they say they are. Don't give strangers personal information!
Be safe in Chat. If someone in a chat says or wears something that you find offensive, abusive or inappropriate, click the report abuse button or close the chat window.
Have a safe Homepage. A good way to remain safe online is to keep all personally identifying information off of your homepage.
In-person meetings can be dangerous. Meeting up in the real world with people you meet online is *not* a great idea.
Always follow your family's rules for the Internet. They're there to make sure you have fun and stay safe online.
Be honest about your age. If you are under 13 and pretend to be older, IMVU will delete your account. If you are over 18 and pretend to be younger to contact underage users, IMVU will delete your account. If you are under 18 and pretend to be older to contact older users, IMVU will delete your account.

What to do
If someone is bothering you, please let us know!
You may have seen, floating about the site, messages that promise you free credits just for posting a message on other people's pages. Come on... you're smarter than that! This is spam, it's impolite, it's against the rules and it doesn't work. There is no way to get free credits by posting messages. We try to be a cool cops most of the time, but sometimes rules are rules
So, as long as you're not sending me a chain letter or spamming my page, please leave me a message!
