Welcome to the IMVU Developer Tools "Learning-The-Basics" tutorial.
Upon completing this tutorial,
you will have customized your first product and submitted it to the IMVU catalog. You'll be well on
your way to becoming a veteran IMVU developer!
To begin with you'll need to have installed the IMVU Previewer v1.9 or higher.
If you haven't done this, click here to download the latest version.

1. Go to the product info page of the product you would like to derive from.
For the purposes of this tutorial, please go to the product info page of the primary baby tee for the Female avatar. This is product167.cfl and can be found here:
http://www.imvu.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/106_40_128_124/products_id/167
|
 |
2. Click the 'Derive from Product' link.
Developers have access to a series of links along the bottom of every product's info page. Click the link called 'Derive from Product'. This will launch the Previewer with your soon to be Derived product ready to go.

 |
 |
 |
3. Get your bearings
The first thing you will notice is that a small dialog window has appeared telling you that the product has been signed by your Developer account. Click OK on this dialog. Basically, the product you are about to create has just been assigned to you personally. This 'asset signing' helps IMVU protects your ability to make money selling products in the IMVU catalog.
Take a look at the three windows of the Previewer. The window that contains the avatar wearing the yellow tee is called the 3D window. The black window with the white text is the console window. The window you should concentrate on now is the Previewer Control Panel.

4. The Edit Textures tab
In Edit Textures, you will see a panel labeled 'Material 0'. This is the material that allows you to change the texture for the tee shirt. Click on the image of the yellow texture in order to browse for your new texture.
NOTE: We know its confusing but the only texture slot that can effect change on this baby tee product is the slot with the yellow texture in it in Material 0. The skin textures included in the other material slots will not actually change the skin color. In order to make a skin product, just browse the catalog to a skin texture you want to derive from and follow this same process.

5. Add your new texture
Now its time to change the texture on the Tshirt. Click here to download an example texture or you can use your own texture if you like. If you want to use the texture we provide, download it to your desktop. Then, click on the texture picture in the previewer and browse to Desktop/Female01_Anime01_Tops_BabyT_BluePooch.jpg.
