Well I'm going to start making hair textures and I see the word ''Hair brushes'' thrown around the forums a lot. What are they for? Do you overlay them over something? Do I need them? Also, I saw somewhere in one of these forums someone saying to make more detailed hair textures you make more lines because more lines = more strands or something like that. Is that true? And if so, how would I go about making them? What filters/brushes would I need? (Using Gimp).

Thanks. Very Happy

Hair brushes are basically just Hair textures.

have you looked at the tutorials for hair textures in the Texture forum here.

Also you can google 'tutorial for gimp to make hair textures' and that will give you a bunch of links.

Usually when I hear about hair brushes, it's for dp art. It makes it easier to draw hair while using a mouse.

For example: http://magweno.deviantart.com/art/Speedy-Tuts-Hair-122102295

Never heard of anyone using those for hair textures before.

If you want to create hair textures to color a mesh you can do that like this tutorial shows and you can find tons more tutorials on making hair textures in the hair section of the Texturing Tutorials Directory

If you want to create your own opacity maps you can look for or create your own "hair brush" or to explain it better you can make a brush style that resembles hair when you paint with it. This is not necessarily needed but some people like them.

I use photoshop and when I click the drop down for my brush size and style there is one (actually several) for grass that works much like the custom brushes for hair.

This could come in handy for the skull cap style hair used to create "baby hair" above the forehead in some hair meshes.
