I opened the IMVU client, no prob, raised the CPU temp a couple of degrees . . .
Saw that someone was waiting to chat, clicked the icon, then the temp. alarm went ape-shite!
So, the Previewer and client both are hogging my CPU and jakking up the temperature.
What to do? |

Hey Mercuria - this is totally our bad.
We are working feverishly on a new release that may address this problem. It is hard to track down, though, as there are many potential culprits. Once this release goes out, we will no doubt focus more effort on reducing the runtime cost of IMVU.
Since you have obviously done such a good job of cataloging the performance cost of IMVU, I was wondering if you would pleasepleaseplease let us know how your CPU fares with this next release....which should be out imminently. |

Just for the record:
Asus MB A7N8X nForce2 chipset
AMD Athlon @1.83GHz
512 SDRAM
GeForce4 Ti4600
XP PRO
I posted a poll in the Dev forums to see who is getting high usage with the Previewer. I'll certainly check the new client when it is released.
I probably won't have an Asus next week nor that processor. PC is dead and undergoing surgery today. |

| I don't know about Merc, but this release is more pc hungry than the last. |

I noticed that even just the auto-login that pops up when you start up your computer uses 36,632K of memory. That's without even running the program! Nothing else in my "processes" even comes close to using that amount (I mean, until I actually start up Photoshop or Max or something.)
What could use 36,632K of memory when it's just a little "login now" window? Is it doing something sneaky? Is it spyware? Is it trying to tell the aliens my exact coordinates? What are you trying to do to my computer????? _________________ Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect. -Mark Twain |

| jinx- I think what you are seeing is the result of a lot of pre-loading that we do in order to make IMVU work faster. That's right, the current slow-as-can-be implementation is actually faster than it *could* be... |

I'll append this post although I have many issues currently.
What I'm seeing is not only long load times (painfully long) but avatars not loading, extreme lag when changing clothes or using animations, double-bubbles, and just a general lack of performance.
My last experience was a few nights ago. When I was invited to chat and join a room, my avatar did not appear to me. It appeared to my chat partner a few times but was not visible 100% of the time. I think I tried to join her chat 7 or 8 times, none of which were fully functional. I did see my chat bubbles however the double bubbles were still rearing their ugly heads on occasion.
CPU usage was still 100% on my end, I think she experienced high usage also. (Same goes with the previewer - it's still hogging like mad).
I *have* to be able to multi-task when I'm on the PC. I simply do not have time to just sit and chat. I hate to say it, but I honestly am very happy with YIM voice chat since I can chat hands-free and still do artwork, banking, shopping, answer e-mail, whatever I need to do. IMVU has to be compatible with multi-tasking.
I would have posted this the night we had problems however, as I was typing my thoughts, I clicked inside the client to go to the shop. When the shopping page opened, it hijacked my current window. Hitting the back button certainly took me back to my page but LOST my 6 paragraphs that I was typing. I HATE my open windows being hijacked!
I'll post my thoughts on the new avatar in another section.

mercuria, thanks for your detailed and thoughtful comments. Feedback like this helps us make the case for prioritizing work related to the performance of the client.
As for the browser hijacking, I'm very surprised to hear that. We've done a lot of work to try and prevent this from happening - can you describe what page (and what browser) you were using? |

Clicking the links in emails notifiying you about PMs also hijacks your browser window. _________________ Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect. -Mark Twain |

| That's between you and your email program. However, if you're using IE, I happen to know there is an IE setting called "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts" or something like that. It's on by default but you probably want to turn it off. |

Agh, I have no idea how to change that in Outlook (or in anything else)...but you know...just putting the PM right in the email would also solve the problem. _________________ Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect. -Mark Twain |

In IE go to Tools > Options (or through the Control Panel's Internet Settings option) and go to the Advanced tab in the new window.
Scroll down a bit to find the "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts" option below "notify when downloads complete".
You could of course also get a browser that uses tabs and set that as the default browser, but that's not an option for a lot of people. |

Got it! Thanks you guys.
I still want my PM notifications to contain the PM message right in the email, but I guess that's a diff thread. _________________ Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect. -Mark Twain |
