I always use Photoshop, and have about 4-5 years of experience with it.

It's a really good tool to use, however it can be hard to get used to if you are switching over from another program.

Personally, use whatever works best for you! Smile
All programs have their pros and cons, but it all comes down to what you can use the most comfortably/efficiently while still producing high quality content.

i prefer photoshop.
i think the spectrum of tools does differ from gimp, along with quality.
both are similar, yes.
however, i think photoshop does a better job with creating due to it's vast filters and tools that can be used for multiple purposes.
i also think photoshop is more useful when it comes to creating opacity maps, because you can easily change the texture into a basic black and white image to use.
that's just my opinion on the programs though.
however, skill level is complete individuality. if you have the ability to make great textures, i don't think any program can necessarily limit the talent that someone has to an extent.

I use to be a Gimp user but now I have Photoshop and it is way better then Gimp when it comes to product quality and icons, Photoshop has more features than Gimp as well. But the downside of Photoshop is it can take some time learning the nice features.

I personally don't think there is a huge difference in the programs as long as you are able to use the one you have. If you are very proficient at gimp, to a certain extent you will have to go over the whole learning process with photoshop. A lot of the features are very different and though most things are comparable some things aren't at all.
That being said, I used Gimp for basically all the products I have up until these last hairs that I've been submitting. I have photoshop because I actually took a college course on it for a credit I needed and I would say now I am very competent at using photoshop. some of the features are pretty obscure and have weird names but are incredibly useful and time saving. Of course you don't have to take a course on ps, but I would definitely get a photoshop for Dumnies or something to give you a guide as to how to use the program effectively.
Gimp is definitely a lot more user friendly

I have to use Photoshop currently. Tried Gimp but it feels too clunky, even compared to PS version from 2003. As much as I want to be optimistic about open source software, good open soft is still a rare exception.
