First let me say this is not directed toward anyone in particular, but it is something I have noticed a lot of people doing recently and I would like to know if others have seen this or done this and perhaps get a reason for it since it is something I think is a little silly and perhaps even insulting to the blind. Maybe though someone can shed some light on the subject that I have not thought of.

Lately, I have noticed an upswing of characters that are not blind, but wearing a blindfold for one reason or another. I have seen some that were not allowed to see anyone else but one person. I have seen some that wore it because they had weird eye colors in a fantasy setting where vampires were walking around with blazing red eyes. I have seen a number of other reasons given, all of them ridiculous to me. Of course RP as thou will, but would someone mind explaining to me how a character deliberately blinding themself is a good thing? Or an interesting plot point?

Is it just that people think the blindfold looks cool and they want to incorporate it into the game? Because some of the reasons I have heard do not make sense to me. If a character is ACTUALLY blind and is wearing a blindfold then I understand it, but if a character is not blind and is wearing a blindfold then... sorry, it seems ridiculous, at least to me anyway.

Thoughts? Comments? Opposing opinions?

I'd have to agree that it is a tired cliche especially if the only reason for a character to wear a blindfold is because their eyes are of a peculiar color and they do not want to be persecuted for their race/species.

I don't have a rp-specific example, but I have a character written who wears a blindfold to hide his identity. I think within the context of the story it works (although it is a cliche and I'm trying to find another way to write it). In this story of mine he's very much so a monster and is attempting to redeem himself. Other characters would know who/what he is by his eye-color.

However in multiverse fantasy RPs, I don't think there really is a reason to hide one's identity. More often than not your character has seen a menagerie of races and species and could care less if someone is wearing a blindfold.

If true blindness is a characteristic of the character or even false blindness (in an attempt to perceive the world in a different way or enhance the other senses), I have no problem with it. If it is a plot point, I think it is ridiculous.

Yes, I have seen this. It bothers me a great deal because in real life I have very poor eyesight. I'm considered visually impaired. I have what is called Optic atrophy (but I think they recently renamed it to optic neuropathy because it's not an actual atrophy). As a result I grew up with friends with varying degrees of eyesight and one of my friends here on IMVU has a friend who is totally blind. So it's a bit offensive when a character is stumbling around as a badly portrayed "blind" person even though the character isn't even really blind, just because they want to hind their violet eyes in a setting where creatures are walking around with red eyes or wolf eyes. They can't comprehend why it makes me angry.

What a lot of people don't seem to realize is that there are masks that are designed to hide eyes that don't block the person from being able to see that can look like blind folds. Sheer fabrics for example, or slitted helmets. And believe it or not tinted glasses have been around for centuries (a lot of people don't realize that). In the late seventeen hundreds and early eighteen hundreds it was believed that spectacles made with glass of particular colors could treat various eye problems.

Remember Gary Oldman's blue Pince Nez sunglasses (if you don't, my Dracula is wearing a pair in this avatar picture). Cobalt spectacles was usually prescription, that's why finding a pair of that color from the late Victorian era can be difficult or expensive (usual price is about a hundred and twenty dollars on ebay).

So alternatives that don't have your character suffering from a disability they don't really have are

1. Masks made of sheer fabrics like fine silk, where when close to your face you can see out of them but other people can't see in. (These sort of things have been around for a very, very long time in Asia and India and became popular later on for European masquerades).

2. Helmets with visors.

3. Glamour spells.

4. Sunglasses / tinted spectacles. (which date back to 1752) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunglasses

5. Wide rimmed hats.

Now when it comes to a character hiding their eyes because they think people will find the color "bad luck" or because they are "only allowed to gaze on just one person" that's stupid to me. Sure you can do what you want in your own room but if you do it in my room I'll tell you flat out that it bothers me.

I don't really freaking care unless it's being done obnoxiously...

like the player is cramming it down everyones existence to draw attention to it or something.

Had a friend who did it due to some form of religion. Diez sometimes wears one (Thats actually sheer enough to see through) at times because due to living in a place that has eternal night shes well.. really light sensitive and has no money to afford something fancier. >_> But only does in briiight sunlight.

I could totally understand why Diez would wear them, the explanation makes sense.

Now that's understandable to me but when they can't see through it and wear it for some petty superficial reason like "I'm ashamed of my eye color" and then act like being blind is better than having strange eyes, that bothers me.

Ooh, I see a certain character looking less than dapper with a metal neck band. Has someone's character fallen to her enemies?

Yeah that gets annoying, but I dont bother with it unless their using it to try and force people to pay attention to my 'Im so judged' sob story.

And yeah. Diez got her arse kicked.

Maybe it's just a personal thing but I find it disrespectful to the visually impaired to blind one's own character (granted it's with a bit of cloth) for a superficial reason. And yes, it's usually for the attention of how judged they are that they feel it's "better to be blind than hated" or some obnoxious thing like that. I just don't have the patience for it. They can do what they like but that does not mean I have to like it.

Ha! Thought so. I got a vague run down of it from SylvanArrow and your avatar picture says a thousand words.

I don't really see it as offensive. But then again in my world nothing is sacred.

Yeah my friend jokingly made a hobo box fort for her in one of her PCs. It was great. XD

Yeah, that's what bothers me too. For a real reason such as Diez has and I could even see the religion thing, strange religious custom, but hey, to each their own. It's only when it is done for petty reasons where I question it, like eye color and things like that.

I am glad you said something, Diez, that is a good reason for characters to wear a blindfold. Extremely light sensitive and can't afford anything fancier, possibly for religious purposes.

Granted it does sound like a pretty ridiculous religion...

Don't worry, Diez, I'll help you get back on your feet. But first the cute hobo from down the road has been checking you out.

(Side note: Would you believe there's actually fan art of Doug Walker's Bum character from Thatguywiththeglasses website?)

It definitely wouldn't be a religion for me or my characters.
