Hello there,
I've recently found a feet mesh i really like and also would like to derive from. The only thing is I'd like to add sandals. Is it possible to connect them to this already existing mesh, same as adding bows or belts to already existing items? Oh, btw, I'm working with 3dsmax.
Thanks in advantage _________________

Assuming the mesh you're deriving from is clothing, then you can add sandals. In Max, weight your sandals to the foot bone(s) and/or toe bones, as normal. Export your mesh or meshes (one XMF for the two sandals, one XMF for the matching feet, or one mesh with everything, or four separate meshes).
Within IMVU, derive from a top (for example), which uses body part 2. Click to add another mesh and give it an ID above 14. (See the Mesh Standardization Thread for help choosing an ID.) Browse to your XMF(s), add textures, stir and/or shake, and submit.

To build a sandal (the reason why you'd want to import the feet into max), I'd start with a Max file that contained the avatar. The Female Master file, for example (or male). It will have the full avatar, including the two feet meshes. There are a couple of tutorials on making shoes - I'd look at this 3D forum for one of those and follow along if you haven't started. The basic idea is it take the default feet and resize them, then build your shoe/sandal mesh around the resized foot. Weighting a foot (with Physique or Skin) is pretty easy compared to other clothing. Then it's just a matter of exporting.

You can add sandals if you like, but you can't take an already existing mesh and load it into your 3DS Max unless you made it yourself. So you'll either need to go back and forth between 3DS Max and the client, making the sandals in 3ds max, try and see if they fit with the feet, go back to 3ds max and adjust the sandals, go back to the client to see they still don't fit, go back to 3ds max etc x100... Or you shape your own feet and model the sandals around them the way nerseus explained (: _________________
