I'm guessing you want to make it shorter like the second style.

This can be done by changing the opacity of the hair. You'll notice in the editor where there is the 'edit' where you put your hair texture. Next to that edit is another one for the opacity. Which is a black & white map of where your hair goes. Take a look at how the default opacity is, and try mixing up something similar but shorter. The white bit is the filled in bit, and the black is the empty space.
