Sometimes comic relief bungling Villains can be a lot of fun in an otherwise serious setting like Harmony in Buffy the Vampire Slayer or other "I want to be evil but I'm just weirdly cute" types. But in general I tend to prefer to interact with (or play) a more serious and complex antagonist. _________________

I was thinking about my favorite type of villain today while talking to another person on a thread that got off topic and instead of starting a fresh thread on villainy I thought I would just bump this thread.
My favorite type of villain is charismatic and charming one minute and terrifying the next. Vampires are usually the creatures that spring to mind for me though not lately, I can't say I am that impressed with the evil vampires in today's movies, but in 1992's Bram Stoker's Dracula, Gary Oldman was amazing. Another of my favorite vampires was Jerry Dandridge in the original Fright Night.
Chris Sarandon was sexy, charming, charismatic and it even hinted at something sad in his past with Amy looking just like someone he knew a long time ago that he had obviously loved and lost. While he was all those things he was also freaking scary and evil. He kidnapped and seduced Amy and made her and Charlie's friend Ed into vampires. He tried to murder him and Peter Vincent, threatened Charlie and his mother.

My favorite villains are definitely the ones that I can identify with. They have a moment that my script-writing professor defined as a "save the cat" moment. It's a phrase coined by Blake Snyder and "describes the scene where the audience meets the hero of a movie for the first time. The hero does something nice — e.g. saving a cat—that makes the audience like the hero and root for him." I think this applies to every character in a story whether it's the hero, sidekick or villain... If I love the villain, it makes it so much harder to see him fall and I love it when the tears flow.
The only character who comes to mind right now is Amon from The Legend of Korra. He is the only reason I kept watching that horribly written (but beautifully animated) dribble. _________________

Thank you for this! I like how you outlined types of villians and now I want to make an OC badguy. There was a character in an episode of Criminal Minds that I simply ADORED. ****, I forget his name...but he was mad. Like just, out-there insane crazy.
I'll be referencing this as a guide. This is nice and cool, thanks for postin' it. |
