I think it is funny when a moderator does not bother to read a thread before commenting.
Shows just how screwed we all are, huh? _________________

| I'm actually kind of hurt. I went through a lot of trouble creating this thread so people who were being told they can't call their creature a werewolf would know it's okay to still call them werewolves... |

I'm going to assume it was an honest misunderstanding so I'm just going to go to go back and try to make the thread's purpose more clear on the first post.
I have just added an opening two paragraphs to the first post to try to make my intentions more clear. And I have also slightly altered a follow up post where I mention the famous Wolfman poem. The change was to acknowledge the future variations of the verse. |

My question and statement were on topic.
I never said anyone in specific was trying to lord their rule over everyone else, but you have to admit that it is a common practice in RP-land, in fact a lot of threads in this very forum talk to what is and is not acceptable.
Making fun of others because they are not conforming to a specific driven format.
Talking down, or talking badly about someone who takes an opposing position is just another symptom of exactly what I was talking about. So is exclaiming bias or ill intent to make the opposition "go away".
That's exactly my point. Rigid RP... where is the fun in that? _________________ As sexy and suave as Sean Connery. CS told me so! |

... I am reading 4 series with 4 different origins of werewolves. Yet another series speculates on how the "myth" of the werewolf could have started. One series has two different types of skinwalkers (who appear alongside and different from werewolves). One is the traditional one you outlined; the other is an inaccurate name for an avatar (of say Coyote or Wolf or Firebird).
Considering that even the legends and myths of werewolves disagree and sometimes outright contradict (never mind all the fiction written about them), the very idea that there could be a "canon" werewolf is ludicrous.
Anyone encountering such silliness in game should treat it with the same (lack of) respect as they would hearing the pronouncement that "All Scots are redheads! Everyone knows that! There is no way your (Scottish) character could possibly have dark hair." It would make equally as much sense. _________________ The size of the purple monkeys has no effect on the height that banana fish can jump. |

Exactly. Which is why I made this thread, to show there are many different versions of werewolves. The Dresden Files alone have six versions which is why it blows my mind when someone says "You can't call THAT a werewolf."
When I'm feeling less lazy I'll do a post talking about Wolf from 10th kingdom as another variant. |

I think it is fine for the GM of a rp to say in this roleplay all werewolves are like this as long as they are upfront about it. If your character does not fit in then go somewhere else. Every game is not made for everyone. People just need to be nicer about it.
If someone is running a rp sololy for a werewolf outbreak, and all the werewolves would be infected from one wolf then it would only make sense that they were the same type. The thing is, the gm would have to state what kind the are upfront. It would save people from a lot of drama and annoyance. _________________

I played Dracula in a Monster High RP once for my own amusement. Classic movie monsters' daughters in a high school setting, what could go wrong?
Well, I made the mistake of letting Dracula take wolf form and someone flipped out. "How dare you use Lycan powers! Vampires should not be able to do that! That's something only Lycans can do and you can't have it!"
After I managed to resolve that (apparently people forget Dracula has a wolf form too...), a werewolf came in insisting he was a shapeshifter and not a werewolf and was insulted when another character called him a werewolf (Again, this is a Monster High game, loosely inspired by classic movie monsters so the fact that he felt the need to be called "shifter" and thought of werewolf as an insult was a little jarring).
As it happened I was in-character and in the middle of describing how some werewolves can change at will and take full wolf form, to some other characters at the exact time this was happening.
I'll leave you to imagine the argument that followed because he was insistent that I was wrong and I "clearly don't know anything about werewolves because that's a shapeshifter!"
I've met people afraid to say their character is a werewolf because of what pop culture has done. They'll very quickly type up an explanation for me (as a room owner) to try to justify why they used the word werewolf instead of shapeshifter and it surprises them that I am familiar with this or that variation of werewolf and don't force them to use a different term because Meyer or some other author insists that to be a werewolf you have to only change on the full moon, or other specific rules.
In reality the word werewolf just means were = man, and wolf which came from the literal "Man into wolf" so all of these various forms can and should be able to fit under the umbrella. There is no reason to force someone to not use the word werewolf just because it's a different type of werewolf from what you, yourself, would define as werewolf.

And then I would point out several pictures of Gerard Butler who was born in Scottland to Scottish parents, and his hair is dark..
And yes.. "Cannon" werewolf or even "Cannon" vampire is a bunch of hooey. There are so many different mythos out there that to say any one is the right one is like trying to say which version of a certain Book is the right one.
I like when people try to tell me how to "class" my character's race when they themselves have some multi-racial hybrid that would never exsist in any book or movie.. demon-angel-dragon was my most recent encounter. I mean... really?? and you want to tell me that my werewolf isn't a werewolf because he has 3 forms? Puh-leeze!! |

You have no idea how many people have tried to tell me a vampire can't turn into a wolf. I have to tell them it's in the original Dracula novel and the film "My best friend is a vampire" and the original Fright Night. I play ...well, Dracula. And I follow the mythology from that novel. It's amazing how few people remember what his powers were in that.

Oh, I know.. I love how close minded people can be. Let's not forget the WoD vampires, Gangrel.. they turn into wolves or big cats, or even bears. (Though wolf is the most common cause they tend to hang out with the Garou... the only leeches that the Garou are comfortable around heh.)
I think next time someone wants to knock my character, I'll turn around and poke holes all through their demon-angel-dragon thing.. -nods- |

Here's another thing that I see forced on people.
People think being a Dhampir automatically means you have to hate full vampires and that full vampires have to hate Dhampirs. When I brought this up someone said to me "Well, it's not like a full vampire would ever accept them or offer to make them a full vampire. That just doesn't happen." Umm... Why not? Not every Dhampir is Blade. But that's a topic for another thread.
A similar one dealing with werewolves is when people actually get angry at me for not having Dracula hate werewolves ("Lycans"). More than once they would look for reasons to resent what he says or take offense and they get surprised and even offended if I tell them "You know... Dracula likes werewolves." Many of them think it's always been this way, that vampires and werewolves hate each other in fiction and folklore and though I understand the logic behind the idea it hasn't always been this way. And I'm not re-writing Dracula to suit the trend. He likes wolves. "Listen to them. Children of the night. What sweet music they make." He could communicate with wolves, he could take wolf form. He compares himself to a wolf. He likes wolves. I'm not retconning that because of what's popular.
In short, just because you are a vampire and someone is is playing a werewolf or just because you're playing a werewolf and someone else is playing a vampire does not mean you have to play them as being at war or has hating / resenting each other. This is still a very new concept. |

My vampire likes werewolves. She finds them to be quiet useful, and sometimes entertaining.
Which I would get heat for in some VtM games, but I don't care. She's my character, and that's how I wrote her.
Oz is my character, I wrote him with three forms. He was born this way. If people don't like it, too bad. I may not like their demon-angel-dragon but I'll RP with them if they have a clue. |
