..............................................● SIZE DOES MATTER:
..................................................Avatar and Signature Sizes.
.......................Avatar Images need to be 160x220
.......................
.......................Signature Banners must be no larger than 500x150
.......................
● If you are using more than one image, then collectively they must not exceed the space a 500x150 image would.
● All images MUST be General Audience appropriate. Absolutely no AP or UFI material is allowed and will incur a forum ban until fixed.
● Check out this link for more information about what GA, AP and UFI means.
.......................
● If you are unsure if your images are too big, please use the templates above to measure them.

.......................
..............................................● Shortcuts are your friend.
..................................................● Find out which key constrains movement in your program.
..................................................In Photoshop, holding SHIFT makes you draw a straight line, drag
..................................................something in a straight line, or resize an image without distorting it.
..................................................● Find out which key selects the eyedropper.
..................................................In Photoshop, pressing ALT while you have the brush tool selected
..................................................brings up the eyedropper tool, so you can select colours from your image
..................................................quickly and easily. In GIMP, this is done with CTRL. It is done by right-clicking
..................................................in OpenCanvas 1, and in Opencanvas 4 it is done by pressing SHIFT.
..............................................● Learn to use layers!
..................................................● Layers are also your friend. Become familiar with how to make layers,
..................................................and learn what the various layer styles/blending modes do. You will
..................................................mostly use 'normal' and 'multiply' type layers.
..................................................● Keep elements of your painting separate with layers.
..................................................that way if you make a mistake you haven't ruined your entire picture. Keep at least
..................................................the hair and face separate, if not the clothes and elements of the face as well.
..............................................● Avoid dodge and burn.
..................................................● If you know what you're doing, dodge and burn can be useful
..................................................to lighten or darken an image, but they are difficult to control well and to
..................................................most seasoned viewers they stick out like a sore thumb. Instead, try using
..................................................lighter or darker shades of whatever colour you're adjusting.
.......................
..............................................● Avoid filters.
..................................................● Filters can make your picture look fancy, but like dodge
..................................................and burn they can look very amateur. Most Photoshop filters are very
..................................................distinctive and it decreases the effect of your painting if someone can look at it
..................................................and know you used, say, a brushstrokes filter.
..................................................● Also, be sparing with the SHARPEN filter. One pass of it
..................................................can make your picture look sharp and sparkly, but overdo it and it just looks bad.
.......................
..............................................● Don't distort your images.
..................................................● It is better to crop a picture down to 160x220 than squish
..................................................it in only one direction to fit; this always looks amateur and
..................................................people don't like to buy it.
.......................
..............................................● Size Matters!
..................................................● For a great looking, detailed effect, try editing at a very
..................................................large size and then scaling your image down at the end. While your
..................................................picture may look a bit messy close up, it will look nice and detailed when viewed in
..................................................a smaller size.
.......................
..............................................● Look at lots of references!
..................................................● When painting, even on an IMVU avatar, it is extremely
..................................................useful to look at reference photos of real people; this will help you learn
..................................................where light and dark areas should be, and what various body parts
..................................................(like the collar bone) really look like.
..................................................
