Here is a simple tutorial on icons... I hope it helps. It's VERY BASIC. There are many many more things that can and probably should be done to make your icons a lil nicer but this will get you started in the right direction!
.............................. EDIT TO UPDATE!!!.......................................
You don't need to use a screen shot! If you type *hiresnobg exactly like that with the * and everything IMVU will save a hi res no background screen shot of your avatar on your desktop. No background trimming needed! Just scale it down to what you like.

If you read the tutorial I posted up there^^^ it covers resizing but if you have text in your icon you need to do another step.
right click your text layer in photoshop and click:
<rasterize text>
then when you resize the image the text will resize also. |

Well there's an easier solution...
click Image then Image Size... and link the chain that's near the Width and Height. Then make the height 80 and see what happens. if it's a little smaller than just cut some pixals or make it SLIGHTLY bigger until it gets to 100x80 |

If you have photoshop CS5, try resizing there. CS5 has a feature in its programming that automatically makes your images retain their crisp smoothness. It might still look a bit off, but your images won't be burry or smudgey. _________________

Why are people resizing it, why not just upload the image?
Well that's what I do. _________________ ✌ |

When you say just upload the image how are you getting it to the 100x80 pixel size to make it an icon? Screen shots are not going to be that size when you take them.
If you create your image at that size from scratch then you won't have to resize but most people seem to like creating the image a little bigger at first so they get less distorion while working on it. Then they resize it down to the 100x80 to make it fit IMVU's required size. |

| For me, I copy my sticker onto a 100x80 canvas, resize my sticker there, and use the animation tool if my sticker is too long/wide. Same goes for my textures XD |

I have a Coral Painter X program and I been trying to figure out for 3 months already how to re-size an image I take off IMVU to a much larger picture without distortion...
Any help here or am I just kinda stuck and have to buy the expensive adobe photoshop or can I use a photo shop that is online that crops images for free? _________________

what I do in photoshop when resizing to make it not look distorted (applies to 160x220 as well any size really) I start with whatever big size I want. then when it comes time to make it 100 x 80. I make a new image. I use the select tool to copy the big sized picture then I paste it to the 100 x 80 picture. I use the shift tool and trasform tool, hover my mouse over the corner then scale the image down to fit the 100 x 80 image. (note sometimes the whole thing might not fit in the 100 x 80 without looking blurry) After it fits. I play with the lenght and width to adjust it to my liking (what fits and what doesnt). Then I make the background in the 100 x 80 image. and add text after the "big" image has been scaled down
And Im sure this works for gimp to.
I apoligize if that was to much typing. but yeah thats how I do it :) |

It is much easier to scale a large picture down than to scale a small picture bigger, without distortion. When you make it smaller it loses pixels that were already there,(this eventually causes it to lose details and become blurry) to scale it bigger it has to create more pixels trying to duplicate what was there. In other words a single square one pixel would be replaced with 4 pixels making the same color square. If you keep enlarging like this it becomes "pixelated" or blurry. For IMVU the best way to get hires pics to start with would be to type *hiressnap or *hiresnobg ... keep the * (If I have those wrong someone please correct me) the first one should snap a picture of the IMVU scene the second one just takes a pic of the avatar and no background. These will be saved on your desktop and will have very good detail to work with. I'm not sure there will be many occsaisions to have higher resolution than these are. _________________ |
