The secret to a good blonde is to not use a lot of yellow or orange. Keep it on the muted side.

I removed this tutorial of mine for the forum a few months ago, but I do my hair differently now, so you may use this as a reference. Smile

Hair Textures
Made with GIMP 2.6

(I will be making a blonde Texture today for this tutorial)
Here are the Colors (coding) I will be using:
#f5c78c, #dead6d, #cd9a58, & #fbd6a5

For Base Color
1. Open a new transparent 256 x 256 image.
I will be using the color #fbd6a5 for this step.
Use a Circle (01) brush and make lines up and down your image, (Not too many just a few)

2. Now go to Filters> Noise > Spread.
I usually set my option to around 10 - 20 px

3. Now go to Filters> Blur> Motion Blur
(Set to Linear, Angle set to 90, Length set in between 20 - 50)

4. Now add another color and repeat steps 2 & 3 for each color

5. Now duplicate each layer and move them up on the layer dock.

6. Merge all layers, and Duplicate the layer and merge again (You may have to duplicate and merge a few times)

For Roots and Tips
7. Make a new layer, I will be using #a77d48 for my roots and tips

8. Choose a Circle Fuzzy (19) brush (Scale the brush to 4.00)
Draw a horizontal line on the top and bottom of your image

9. Now blur > Gaussian Blur> Set to your liking, I use around 40 -80
(depending on what colors I am doing

For Shine
10. I am using #ffffff for my shine, Draw Horizontal lines acrossed you texture

11. Duplicate your shine layer, On the first layer we will be going to
Filter> Distort> Shift
Shift Vertically, 30 px

12. With your second shine layer, go to blur> Gaussian Blur, 20 px
Now go to Filter> Distort> Shift
Shift Vertically, 30 px

13. Now merge your 2 shine layers together.
Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur, 2 px

14. now go to Filter> Distort> Shift
Shift Vertically, 30px

15. Now Duplicate your shine layer
Filter> Distort> Shift
Shift Vertically, 30px

16. Merge your shine Layers
Press Ctrl + F a few times, Set to Overlay and your are done.

Here is my final Product:

This was very helpful. Thanks to all those who posted the tuts. Another suggestion I have is to use th wind distortion affect on a squiggly line and then use motion blur on it.

Anotehr tip...

Gather up some snapshots of RL blond hairdo shades you like, open them up in your image making program as you work then use the eyedropper tool to sample those colors when making your texture. Its surprising what the shades really are that make up 'blond'.

blonds are so personal too....you never know which will sell. And they generally look crappy in the try it room, which doesn't help at all. Try not to resort to illuminated to make it look good. Illuminated blonds are not too popular

Just fiddle with the hue back and forth until you find it. if it doesn't have enough blue add some doesn't have enough red add some. etc.
