Alright . . I know, my first post on the forum, and I'm probably asking one of the most asked and annoying questions ever . . don't hurt me please . . ?

The installer always fails, about three quarters of the way through. The top status bar gets about three quarters through while the bottom manages to fill . . and it attempts to move onto the next segment, but says "Download failed." My computer (unless if I somehow totally misread all the requirements . . ) fulfills the prerequisites required to run imvu.

System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

Computer:
Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.66 GHz
2.66 GHz, 256 MB of RAM

. . . any ideas? Tech support isn't getting back to me.

Good bookmark to keep on hand. http://www.imvu.com/download.php That link will take you to the page that contains the current Official release of IMVU's software, plus any pre-release versions. The benefit of them on that page is that the installer file will download entirely to your hard drive prior to installing. The issue that you're experiencing is one that has been plaguing IMVU for over a year now....Their streaming installer file ALWAYS seems to time out.

The link that DJ has posted is the current Official Release...but if you have any issues with it, you certainly can try any of the pre-releases listed....and they are the FULL installers too....Not just a patch. So you don't need to download the .0 version and then a .2 or above on top. Just download the one you want.

Do a very thorough uninstall of IMVU. Either use IMVU's uninstaller, or Windows through the Add/Remove software feature. When it asks you if you want it to remove all files including Cache, tell it Yes.

Once the uninstall completes, search your hard drive for any remaining fragments of IMVU on your computer. Start>Search>Enter IMVU in Window & Search Everywhere (Windows Vista)..................Start>Search>All Files & Folders>Enter IMVU in Window, and make sure "My Computer", or at least your Hard Drive is selected. (Win XP) In both operating systems you are going to need to have System Files visible. To do that in Vista/Win 7, simply open Windows Explorer (Just open something off of your Start Button such as Control Panel)...at the top left you will see "Organize"...click that, then the Folder and Search Option...click the View Tab, then check the box for Show hidden files and folders and OK out of everything.

Delete anything you may see related to IMVU.....

Now clean up your Hard Drive a bit...Double click on "My Computer">Right click on your Hard Drive>Select Properties......Small Window will open...go to Tools>Disk Cleanup....put check marks in all the boxes & click OK....A window will appear asking you if you want to remove all of these files. Click Yes...These files that are about to go "Bye-Bye" are SOLELY temporary files and WILL NOT hose up your computer in any way, shape, or form. Windows would not allow you such an easy step to do if anything critical to your system was involved here.

Next, Defrag your hard drive now....Double click on "My Computer">Right click on your Hard Drive>Select Properties......Small Window will open...go to Tools>Defragment Drive....Select your hard drive & click Defragment. Might take awhile to complete...so just leave your computer alone.

Once that all finishes, reboot your computer....You may notice a slight improvement in it....You removed a LOT of garbage from your drive, and then got all of your scrambled files put back in their correct place. Now go download a fresh copy of IMVU....http://www.imvu.com/download.php (This link will give you access to the LATEST releases only) If you need an older version, use this link: http://static-akm.imvu.com/imvufiles/installers/InstallIMVU_xxx.xx.exe Where you see the X's near the end of that URL, simply change them out to the file version you want....so for instance if you want version 408.14, make the URL look like this, http://static-akm.imvu.com/imvufiles/installers/InstallIMVU_408.14.exe Also, pre-releases *may* have been disabled, so you may want to look through the Older news and release notes for the version you install to see if anything is mentioned. I merely say this because on the newer pre-releases, if one becomes disabled due to whatever reason (crashes, etc)...the user will be prompted to roll back to the Official release. But with using older versions you're going to be prompted EVERY time you log in anyway...so you're not going to know if the pre-release was disabled for technical reasons. Lastly, pre-releases .2 to .8 are entered into the URL just like that...NOT .02 or .08, so remember that your URL version number will be 4 digits and not 5.

Install it and have your fun again. Very Happy

If you still experience crashes you will need to make sure that your computer is updated with all of its neccessary hardware drivers. Graphic and Sound drives in particular. And easy way to find out what type of graphic card or chip your computer is using, type devmgmt.msc into your "Run" window. (Click on Start>Run) Look under your Display Adapters and you will see your card/s listed. (Nvidia or ATI)...then simply go to their web sites and download the appropriate driver update for your system. However, if you have a manufacturer computer (Dell, HP, etc)....go to your manufacturers web site and get the update from there. Same holds true for your Sound card drivers.

Another thing you want to keep up to date is your Java and Flash players. IMVU utilizes a lot of these two elements around their web site, and even within the client itself. Though they do have a version of Flash built right into their software, keeping yours up to date on your computer can help with issues you might have with simple browsing of their site. Check http://www.adobe.com/downloads/ And look for the link for the Free Flash Player. For an updated Java version, check out http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp What you need to look for on that page is the one labeled JRE (Jave Runtime Environment)...

Now again, once your computer uninstalls and the updates all of these drivers, you may want to do one more defrag of your hard drive....drivers are a very vital part of your computer and uninstalling, then re-installing them can certainly scramble important system files around your drive. This defrag, if you opt to do it, shouldn't take so long since you just did one earlier...Once completed give your computer a restart and try IMVU again.

Hope all of this helps you out.
TT Very Happy

One last note - If you use the newest official release, or newest Pre-release, and continue to have any issue, be sure to look in the Latest News and Releases forum for the Staff monitored topic related to the version of client you chose to use.

Turn off your Anti virus and firewall JUST for the downloading of the file.....Once the file completely downloads, re-enable your anti-virus and scan it. Some anti virus software interferes with the download from time to time....perhaps that is what is happening with you.

Once you finish downloading, reboot your computer so your anti virus and firewall enable themselves again. Double click the installer file you just downloaded, and let IMVU install.

What type of internet connection are you using? (Wireless, DSL, Cable)? Are you on a network?

You're showing the little green check mark at the top left of your avatar pic now as I type this response....Are you on the chat client now? Or perhaps the Previewer?

Just pleasantly pleased to see that actually...Laughing
