When I first became interested, I checked with AutoDesk. They informed me that they ONLY sell the most current edition. I asked about possible sources for the older editions supported by IMVU and they informed in no uncertain terms that the purchase of ANY of those were through illegal channels and constituted a crime.

To say the least I've been trying to muddle through teaching myself Blender and have been unable to figure out how to bring in a mesh that I want to derive from so that I can change it. I am at the point of giving up all together. I see many things derived from radically different items so it MUST be possible to take a mesh and alter it but 1) I can't FIND the mesh even though it is for one of the original base products from IMVU and 2) with the one mesh I did find, there seems to be no way to pull it into Blender to that I can alter it. I'm completely new to 3D but am very computer literate otherwise. Any help could save my mind.

Are you sure, because I just ck and you can still download max 9 try exe . and after 30 days you need to buy the key from Autodesk...
I am saving to buy max 9 , one of these days.. but if Autodesk don`t sell those keys for max 9 .. I am stuck Crying or Very sad
there is not point to get the new one, if it does not work for what I want it.. I just try to call Outodesk authorized dealer close to were I live ,,, they just closed 10 minutes ago.. I`ll try to call tomorrow .

Ps... you don`t find the meshes, you make them from scratch , and there is a group of developers that use blender for imvu , they can point you were you can find the files/ tutorials you need..

At this point Version 9 is still considered the current version. When I checked IMVU wasn't supporting Version 9. I take it that it does now from what you said. Once Version 10 becomes Autodesk's official, I don't know how long they will continue 9 but it is good to know that IMVU is supporting 9 now. Sorry. Didn't mean to give you a heart attack but when I called, everything I found on the IMVU website said they didn't support version 9.

On the other, if someone has derived a throne from an easy chair, in reality, the built it from the ground up? They didn't actually have a mesh to start working from but they pay the mesh fee anyway?

Thanks for the help.

max 9.. it work because Ner made a export for it .. and max 9 is not the same as max2009.
when we make a new 3 d item we have to derived from a similar product from imvu and yes we pay submission fees.. any new mesh is made from scratch and if you buy a mesh from the net.. you still have to know how to make it work for imvu and have 3 d max, skeptchup or blender, some of us we just use the nodes from the example files that imvu provide, but those can be make whit maxx from scratch too..
Ps; a lot of 3 d meshes from the net , are not sold for business, you need to read the agreement ( and not I have never bought one )

When purchasing 3DS Max 2009 with a subscription, you may download a copy of Max up to 3 versions behind what you are using. So 2009 is the latest version, so I can use 3DS Max 9 and up using my 2009 purchase (on the same computer of course).

The IMVU exporter is an ADAPTED version of the Cal3D exporter, which means it will not just work for imvu stuff.

Ya think if we poke IMVU with a stick, they'll make an exporter that is compatible with Max 2009? I'd really hate to think that I just wasted my money......

Hi you all..

although I'm new to the IMVU world... I'm well acquainted with 3d Smile
My everyday jobsfor the last 11 years has been in making visual FX for Movies, television programs and commercials...

the thing is... I have a 3D company with 10 Softimage XSI licenses... which are very expensive.. so I don't really feel like buying max, just to convert my files to the IMVU format... isn't there any other converter... ??? from .obj any other format...

In short, no. IMVU make it very difficult for us to export out of anyhting, so there is currently no exporter for XSI. You can always try sketchup?

Waste of money? If I thought I were out $3500 I'd be more peeved than that Smile

As pointed out in other places Autodesk will provide you with a previous version of Max if you request it.
