Hey everyone,
We are pleased to announce that we are taking the wraps off of the Beta release of Peer Review. Late last year, we ran an Alpha test for Peer Review. We’ve taken that feedback and re-vamped the system to address many of the participants’ concerns. The new system is sleeker, faster, and much easier to use. In this message, you’ll find all of the relevant details related to the Beta launch.
What is Peer Review?
Last year the community requested that we ensure our products were in compliance with the Virtual Goods Policy (VGP), while at the same time reducing the risk of a product being taken away due to flagging. In response to this request, we’ve been working on a system called Peer Review, which gives the community the ability to decide if a product belongs in the catalog or not.
This kind of control is unprecedented in any virtual community. For the first time, you, the IMVU community, will be able to have a say in the kinds of content allowed in IMVU as it relates to our VGP. Your votes will count in determining the kinds of content displayed, and potentially allowed in IMVU.
The system we’ve developed is designed to be very quick and easy to use, in order to ensure that as many products as possible can be quickly reviewed. Once the system is fully turned on, all new products will be required to be peer reviewed, old products can be self-submitted by their Creators.
The Benefits of Peer Review
There are a number of good reasons to participate in Peer Review. We’ll cover the most important ones in this note:
1) The community gets to say what is and isn’t acceptable according to the Virtual Good Policy. This means you have a chance to voice your opinion on the kinds of products you want to see at in IMVU. We will review voting patterns over time in order to understand potential changes to the Virtual Good Policy.
2) Peer Reviews will be plugged into the next generation of Tiers and help contribute to your overall score. Those who do more reviews will earn more points toward higher tier levels.
3) The catalog search and presentation mechanism will return peer-reviewed items first over non-reviewed. This will ensure that the highest quality products with the least chance of being taken-away are presented first to the customers.
4) As more items are peer reviewed, the number of products flagged should reduce significantly. This means fewer worries for Creators.
Peer Review Mechanics
Peer Review will operate as outlined below:
1) A product is submitted for review – This can happen in any of the following three ways: 1) New submitted product marked for publishing; 2) Self-submitted by the Creator; 3) Submitted by Customer Service.
2) Creators load up Peer Review - There will be several links on IMVU.com that will let you access the Peer Review tool. Each product is randomly assigned to reduce gaming.
3) Creator reviews the product and answers a few questions – For each product reviewed, we are asking the community to evaluate the product, its assigned rating, and product page to ensure compliance with the Virtual Goods Policy. The page is really simple to use.
4) Product passes or fails – At launch, all products will receive either a Pass or Fail vote based on the reviewer. We are using a simple formula to determine if a product will Pass or Fail that considers the number of votes in agreement vs. the total count. We will continue to monitor the performance of the system and adjust the thresholds accordingly.
5) Product owner receives notification – Based on the outcome of the Pass/Fail vote, the product owner will receive a Homepage message telling them if the product passed or failed. Also, product owners will have a special page where they can review the status of any products under review.
In order to ensure stability of the system and performance, we are going to be rolling out Peer Review in a phased fashion.
At the time of launch, ONLY AP stickers will be queuing up for review. The launch plan will be roughly the following:
Launch – 1% of AP Stickers are queued up.
Launch +1 day – 10% of AP stickers, and 5% of GA stickers.
Launch +2 day – 25-75% of AP stickers, and 25-50% GA stickers (dependent upon the performance we are seeing)
Launch + (as long as it takes) days – +25% to both AP and GA stickers
In conjunction with the launch process, we will also begin testing some updates to the IMVU client which allow for 3D object testing for Peer Review. Once that pre-release process has passed our quality process, we will begin adding a small amount of AP 3D objects to the queue. Again, provided we don’t run into any serious bugs or issues, we’ll begin adding all 3D AP and GA items as quickly as we can. 3D product will follow a similar ramp up process as stickers. We will announce when we start, as well as what the rough %s are throughout the launch.
Is there any new technology I should be aware of?
Yes, there are several.
1) Submission process: The submission process will be changed (over time) to require all new products to be peer reviewed. This means that the time it will take to move a product from submission to catalog will depend upon the number of people reviewing a product.
2) New Peer Review functionality in the client: While not yet live, (it is still completing testing), we will have a new ability to test any 3D object (Clothes, Rooms, etc) in the client. This new functionality will load up an avatar with the test skins already applied. This new functionality WILL NOT interfere with your outfits, or rooms.
3) New product permission system: While mostly behind the scenes, there will be a new permission system in place that will add more access capabilities to a product. For now, you’ll experience the permission system when you submit a new product. Immediately after submitting, you’ll be presented with your product page and a notice telling you the product has not been published. You will need to publish your product, which will trigger a peer-review, in order for anyone other than you to be able to use it.
Wrap Up
This is a very exciting project for the Creator community and IMVU. With Peer Review, we will begin to be able to address concerns about the kinds of products in our catalog and offer up a level of control to the community not possible elsewhere. We encourage all Creators to take advantage of the Peer Review system and ensure that all products in IMVU are the best possible.
Please remember this is a beta launch of Peer Review, so you may see some aspects of the system change over the next few weeks. Also, if you log into Peer Review and there are no products displayed, it may be that only AP items are in the queue (and you don’t have an AP), or we’ve disabled the queue in order to address a bug. Peer Review is a very complicated system behind the scenes, so please help us work out the kinks.
For additional information please read the Peer Review FAQ within the Peer Review system.

Are you sure your techs havent stuffed anything up doing this.
Seriously, 4 items that are not stickers they are clothing that I submitted to the catalogue last night, ie hours and hours ago, are not showing up in the new catalolgue.
They show up in the old catalouge but not on any of the new links to the new catalogue. This really isnt acceptable, I usually get a few sales from new items. A delay of this long for them to appear in the catalogue is seriously wrong and I cant help but think its coz of the coding to start peer review, suprisingly enough I think there has been another OOPS!

Clothes arent going through the peer review process as mentioned above. Did you click the publish button when you submitted it to the catalog?

Are you talking about some goody two shoed parents group on IMVU threating to sue IMVU because of all the AP type content available to minors (or so I heard)...I sure didnt ask for this and I have yet to meet a dev or customer of mine who say they asked for this.
Spose it dont really matter...IMVU offically sucks now, I wont be spending my money here anymore. I think I'll go get a few more RL tattoos instead! _________________

Polystyrene had the same problem: the products did show up in the new catalog some hours ago but after quite a bit of delay.
I first posted about it in the forum 8 hours ago. I had been waiting a while for the first 3 items to show up then. The fourth item I submitted shortly after that.
i have the same issue AFTER publishing products.
the only way you can find them is by clicking my banner on my home page or from one of my catalog pages.

This really isnt good enough. I firmly believe this is on topic in this thread because I think they Broke something introducing the peer review. _________________
