IMVU now is an 'OpenID Provider'. Basically, your avatars.imvu.com/name is an OpenID you can use to sign in to any other sites that support it.
This has several uses:
When other sites support OpenID sign-in, you won't have to create a separate username/password for every site. Instead, you can type in your IMVU OpenID (mine is avatars.imvu.com/Dusty).
When you sign in to an OpenID site, you are basically 'proving' that you own the URL that is your signon. When I type in avatars.imvu.com/Dusty to a remote site, that site then contacts imvu.com to see if I am actually the owner. And, once you're signed in to IMVU, IMVU can verify whether or not that's actually your homepage.
In effect, OpenID means you only have to sign in to one place (these places are called OpenID Providers), and that one place can 'vouch' for you to another site (other sites are called 'OpenID Consumers' in this model).
There are a few other benefits that can happen with IMVU OpenID: Because you are proving that you own your avatar URL, resellers can know who they're dealing with, without having to manage their own login/password system.
Also, OpenID allows for 'extra' data to be passed back with the authentication. I implemented extras in the IMVU Provider to pass back credit balances, pass ownership, etc... (Of course, this is all at your option. You might want to sign into another site without letting them know how many credits you have).
One quick idea off the top of my head: Someone could make an external site that uses IMVU OpenID signons, and only allow people in if they have an Access Pass, or have purchased their avatar name, or whatever...
I want to point out that I personally feel the best use of OpenID with IMVU is for other sites that are based around IMVU---Resellers, alternative forums, etc...
Yes, understanding OpenID is a bit of a technical hurdle. I don't expect users to be often typing in avatars.imvu.com/ChickaFlicka into other websites for signing in.
But, a reseller could be set up to explicitly use only IMVU OpenIDs. You could go to their site, type in your avatar name, and they could handle everything else, knowing that you're not an imposter, while also not needing any password, etc...
Glad to see you got this. QQ uses something like this quite succesfully with game vendors and more commerical entities (coke china).
I can't find you in the Open ID Providers list on the site you linked, however. For that matter, IMVU does not come up in any searches, either. Is your membership too new?
Just because I don't really understand how it works, how does someone know that it is truly Chicka that signed in with her name and not me using her name? Are the passwords the same or something? _________________ My CatalogMy BlingMy Derivable MeshesMy Credit Partner: DevCredits
how does someone know that it is truly Chicka that signed in with her name and not me using her name?
Short answer:
If you can't impersonate Chicka on IMVU, then you can't impersonate Chicka on a remote site. If you found out her IMVU password or hacked her account or something, then you could impersonate her on a remote site.
Long answer:
From a technical side, OpenID is all about 'ownership' of a URL.
Basically, when you browse to another site and type in avatars.imvu.com/ChickaFlicka, the other site will contact avatars.imvu.com and say, "I have a person here who claims to be the owner of 'avatars.imvu.com/ChickaFlicka', is it true?". IMVU will say, "I don't know yet, forward that person over here". Then, she gets forwarded to our login and OpenID pages. If she logs in as ChickaFlicka, then at that point IMVU really knows it's her, and the only thing left to do is verify whether or not she actually wants to prove to the remote site that she is ChickaFlicka. (It would be a bit of a privacy leak, for example, if Chicka browsed some random site, and that site asked us "hey, is this person chickaflicka by any chance?" and we said "yup" without asking if she wanted to let them know).
If you're already logged into IMVU, then IMVU already knows you're really you. So you usually don't have to re-enter your password, you just have to go through the OpenID 'association' page, which will verify that you want to prove to this other site that you're really you, and let you select which data (credits, gender, etc) you want to let them have.
Once you confirm, we then forward you back to the other site, along with some 'association' information. The other site doesn't get your password, but it has received proof that avatars.imvu.com says you are the rightful owner of this URL.

Um, never-mind... I don't think that site has what it takes, to be user functional.
The concept sounded cool!
Guess that is why it is still a concept.
Oh well, so much for integration there. (Hope they make it more user friendly, or at least provide human readable instructions.)
EDIT:
Sadly, I think I got it now... Not sure why you used that link, to a site that is simply a contributor... without posting the actual site. (The main site offers no assistance, nor is IMVU listed in any of the sites there. Yes, it works with IMVU, but I can not find the listings. I would have assumed "Social Networking". Hehe, I see mine though!)
Now to figure out how it works. (Got the concept, but can't find out how to actually use the login, for my site.) _________________ Turn your credits into views.
