Do not use Maya There is no support to get your creations out of Maya and into IMVU. |

Great programs! But there's no direct way to get anything "out" of those programs and into IMVU. With enough effort, you might be able to get some of the meshes/textures from Daz (for example) and into 3ds Max. But once there, you'd likely just have a "shell" of a mesh with all of the hard work still remaining. For example, a 3D shirt mesh wouldn't work well with the IMVU avatar without a lot of tweaking. And once the shape were done, you'd still have to "weight" it to the avatar to have it behave like clothing. And that's ignoring the bigger issue that almost everything in Daz is restricted by copyrights so that you can't resell the meshes/textures on IMVU. With some programs like Bryce, there might be looser restrictions - but then, generating terrain isn't that difficult. Hexagon has similar copyright restrictions.
The issue is that most of those programs aren't really 3D modelling programs - they let you manipulate 3D objects and render images and animations. The meshes, like the ones sold here on IMVU or on other sites like Turbo Squid, are copyrighted and generally not for resale.
Other programs, such as 3ds Max, Blender, Sketchup, Milkshape, TrueSpace, etc. are modelling packages that allow you to make meshes. Only meshes you make or those that are marked for reselling are eligible to upload to IMVU. Of those programs, only Max, Blender and Sketchup have a way to export the meshes and get them into IMVU. Milkshape used to have a following but I haven't heard anything in years. TrueSpace... I think has finally disappeared Details on the other packages can be found on the sticky threads in this forum.

3DS Max Design will work great! You just need the proper exporter for your exact version of Max. Check out the sticky thread related the Max Plugins.

| Does anyone know if Autodesk's Inventor or Dassault's Solidworks is IMVU compatible? |

@Cugix: Nope, those products won't work. There are only three modelling programs that have some kind of support: Blender, Sketchup, and 3ds max. For each of those, only some versions are supported.

i've imported the female avi into Poser, rigged her, wrote an XAF export script and can now export XAF files. just finished last night, now i'm testing it. so far so good.
Poser is *so* much easier to use for making poses and figure animations. especially with IK turned on. exporting an animation XAF takes a split second. most of the logic is built directly into the Poser rig, which makes the export script very simple.
after working on the import, i have one question:WTF originally rigged that avi!????
very educational, though. sometimes i learn more from a weird source than from something that's perfect. XD
cheers ^.^ _________________ --erin ^.^ |

I was just at turbosquid. I wonder why anyone would purchase anything from their site if it could not be used here? Maybe to bring into 3d max and take apart and resize? Then revamp and use as your own here? *shrugs* Some of their 3dmax meshes are free, some very pricey?
I have another question about polycount? How many is too many for say like a castle within IMVU? What number of polys should we try and not go over? _________________

Regarding purchased meshes (from Turbosquid or otherwise): The key is in licensing and usage. If you buy a mesh with the intent that you're going to resell it mostly as-is for others to texture (like here on IMVU) then you need a license that allows that usage. Most of the meshes for sale are not for reselling purposes, but for use in some sort of engine. You might buy a tree model to put in a game or a car to put in a simulation - but you're not going to be reselling the tree or the car, you're selling your game or simulation which happens to include the tree or car. It gets fuzzy (at least to me) on whether including the tree in a room mesh would be breaking the original license or not.
