I need to apply a texture to a ball shape, but I can't seem to get it to work, it just goes on patchwork instead of the imported graphic. does anyone remember if there's a tut somewhere on that, I don't remember doing one.

This problem is a design limitation of Sketchup. Sketchup is a drafting tool and was only intended to provide visual concepts on flat planar objects used in the drafting industry as a quick production alternative to programs like AutoCad.

Workaround.... Export your model as a 3DS, import it into 3DMax and apply your textures.

I have read a tutorial on it, but do not remember where it is Embarassed
I will see if I can explain it...

You have to show hidden geometry.
Import your texture and apply it. If it is not a seamless texture, make sure you stretch it so when wrapped around it will cover your object.
After it is applied, it will show up on only one of the faces.
Get out the paint tool, press "alt" and click on the textured face. Release "alt" key. Paint all the faces in order around the globe.

You may have to position the textures on some individual faces if they don't line up. To keep this to a minimum keep your camera in standard views. Front, right, back, then left. Make sure you texture them in order or your image will be jumbled.

I hope this makes sense. I will check back after a sleep to see if it helped.

Good Luck!

Argh!

I must have read every tutorial I could find on SketchUp and I haven't seen this trick! Thanks for the tip. I hate 3DMax and this is now one less reason to use it - lol

Glad I could help.

I found it on some obscure site.... on page 6 or 7 of a "sketchup Tutorial" web search.
