edited to amend: please see page 17 for new wave of discussion, or add to what you see in here as the pros & cons of the Access Pass.

Update! Posted 12/07/07

Hey everyone,

As we announced when we began offering refunds for the Access Pass, this would not be going on indefinitely. Starting December 15th, IMVU will be moving to only offer refunds for the Access Pass if the purchase was made in the last thirty days. So if you purchased your Access Pass more than thirty days ago and no longer wish to have your Access Pass, you have until December 15th to file for your refund of the Access Pass, or you will be ineligible to do so.

Many of our adult users in the IMVU community have not ventured out with their $20 to buy an "Access Pass" to utilize the "age restricted" content in IMVU's magnificent catalog.

I would like to stimulate some conversation in this open forum to educate, share opinion, and to assist IMVU in marketing successfully to their adult user base. This isn't JUST about the pass. We adults spend a lot of money here on non-AP items.

We all have strong opinions on what is age appropriate for us as adults, however we have recently discovered that IMVU does not have the luxury of agreeing with us due to rules and laws of their credit card services vendor.

I really do not want to turn this into a full-blown discussion on the content rules per se...but to receive some feedback from the NON-AP holders as to why they don't own the AP...

Is it because the current marketing doesn't sell the pass? Not enough information on what you will "really" receive as a benefit of spending that 20 bucks?

I would hate to see someone fork out the cash to only visit the AP forums to find out what they can't see without the pass...

So without further ado....

Those who don't own it...why not?

Those who do....why would someone want to buy it?

Let's give them some facts about what is truly available when you buy the pass.

:::::::::::::: please do not turn this into something a 13 yr old should NOT be reading discussion :::::::::::::::::::::::::::: be concerned for our teen users please!!!! ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

also...please do not use this post as a place to complain about the recent removal of access pass content....let's keep that over in the AP...UNLESS you can deliver it politely and without flaming on IMVU....

Great idea Chicka Very Happy

I wanted to throw in my two cents as an AP holder.

Long long time ago (Laughing) I was gifted the AP as a new user by my gf as we were curious on what was behind that wonderful little icon.

We came to discover that it at the time wasnt very well organized and not many things in it (unlike now).

Later it became a developing tool.

I am glad I have this pass as I would not be able to purchase one now without a CC.

I use it to try to enhance the AP section and to make the AP pass worth it all around.

What good is a dev without some variety to show their consumers lol

I love having my AP but purely as a tool. I love making AP products, I love knowing that I have contributed to the adult community especially after recent events.

I dont chat enough to make it worth it as a social aspect so I cant comment on that front but I can say as a dev it is one of my most cherished tools I own (next to ps and max of course Laughing )

Thats all for now I am sure I will chime in again when the time is right.

I do have the AP, and you want to hear my honest opinion on it? It's a proper waste of 20 bucks that I would have rather used to buy credits with.

The way it was marketed at the time I bought it led me to believe that it really was a so called 'adult pass', not pron per se, but at least realistic nudity and compromising poses (sadly the love tables were moved to mature). I was wrong and if I had known better about what the AP was I would have NOT wasted 20 bucks on it.

I own 2! restricted items, which were gifted to me, I absolutely loved the love tables but they were taken away with so many other reasons to purchase the pass. I wish I could get a refund *unhappy sigh*

I don't have the AP Pass but I was thinking about buying it so that I would be able to get some of the adult furniture that amused me like the dancing action chair and bed and other similar items like that. But with all the stuff happening now with adult items being taken away I wouldn't want to risk it just to have the items I bought taken away.

I felt the need to chime in again Laughing

Not ALL adult items are being removed. As a consumer there is "buyer beware" policy.

Know the TOS follow it. If you see an item in AP that is probably against TOS dont purchase it.

There are plenty of great adult items that follow the TOS. Lots of clothing and even furniture that are OK to purchase.

I dont think being afraid to buy adult products (especially now with automated reimbursements) there is really a need to be afraid anymore.

Even if an item gets pulled you do get reimbursed by IMVU. So there is no real money lost in the end. Sure its sad to see an item go but again no money was lost and "buyer beware"

I have done lots of restricted clothing as well as some furniture and I make sure they follow the TOS for my consumer safety as well as my own.

IMHO

i dont have one. the reason why is first cost. i never felt it was worth $20. even as a developer i dont think i would do much in the lines that would be there. i've never been a person who went for skimpier clothing even in real life and it didnt appeal to me here.

i look at is mearly as a way for people to cyber- in alot of cases this is why people buy/ bought it..once again it didnt entice me to buy it.

i felt buying it, would be a waste- not because the current changes- but because its not who i am mostly. I dont have alot of money and that $20 can be saved to buy other things to help my developing ( such as a drawing pad.. a better monitor... or save for a meshing program ) which in the long run would help me more than the pass.

I was told about IMVU by word of mouth by a friend that joined. I was told about the adult materials that were available to be bought. This was intriuging to say the least.
Well I joined and started having fun with the other adults here. In less than 2 weeks things went missing out of the catalog. Being new I thought it was just a glitch in the system. I continued to spend.
Soon I heard rumblings from my friends and was told tio check the forums to see what was going on. I was shocked that IMVU didn't monitor the catalog that they provided and was making money off the items that they were deleting and telling us it was a bug and these items shouldn't have been in the catalog in the first place. You all know the rest of the story.

At first IMVU's access pass was a great experience but it soon became a nightmare.

The access pass as it stands now isn't worth buying and I would urge IMVU to pull the pass and not sell it to anyone until there really is some worth to the AP.

I do not own an Access Pass...

My Reasons

1) Do not have a Credit Card..and do not want to own one..lol...and if there are other ways to pay for it I do not know...Credit Cards or Debit Cards cannot prove age...also....anyone with a checking or savings account can have one even if they are under 18 years old..

2) There is no appeal for me to own one....curiosity yes...and I have a smexy pose that I can no longer use... Crying or Very sad Other than that...There is no appeal to shell out the 20.00.

3) I do not chat enough to warrant spending the 20.00...I am helping out in the Bugs and Testing forum most of the time and if I am not doing that...I am working on items to submit to the catalog...

The only reason for me to shell out 20.00:

Is because people who do have the AP, can do things to my avatar that I cannot see...and would not allow to be done...I only would find out if the persons page does not have an AP lock on it, would be from their photo gallery..so it would only be to protect my pixil backside so to speak......IF I do decide to get one...I would like the option of it NOT being known to others...It is like an advertisement...with that little pink lock....When I do the people search...and count how many people have the AP it is like 7-8 out of 10 profiles that have the AP....So I am reluctant to use the Chat Now Feature and only chat with people I have already on my buddy list or have gotten to know from the message boards...

These are my reasons....I hope that this was helpful.

Thanks for the candid answers everyone...and I do think we are getting some good feedback.

Kitty...I don't think everyone buys the pass to cyber....because if they do...that is where disappointment comes into play...it isn't really set up to accommodate cyber anymore than an AOL chat window...at least in my opinion...(people need to use their imagnation here just as well as any other program where they choose to take that path)

and Kitty....your products are awesome..I would love to see you make dresses for AP use Wink

That is where I think the marketing may mislead people.

And those who came here from word of mouth...not only were you mislead by any marketing that you read or researched...you were mislead by your friends NOT knowing what was allowed and not allowed in the catalog...because let's be honest....MOST people WEREN'T aware until items were disabled. How many have honestly read the ToS regarding AP content before they bought the pass?

So...it's the marketing that truly needs to be changed so people get a clear understanding of exactly what the heck the Access Pass is....isn't it?

I, as a bunch of others, bought the AP out of curiosity and also, I had heard, at the time, that users were using ap actions on other people without their consent or knowing it. So basically I got it because I'm paranoid about pixel violations. Sure enough, when I did buy it, the actions could be done on unsuspecting people. Luckily I have a good friend and he's my roommate that let me try them out since he didn't have it at the time.

Luckily they changed that so that you can't use those actions on non-ap users.

Now, it's basically a developing tool and well, honestly, I like hanging out in the ap forum for the most part except when the debacle went down. Now that things have calmed down, it's gotten fun again.

Is it worth the $20? Depends on how you view it. If you're looking just for cyber, not really but at least it's only a one time fee. For deving? It is if you can make the sales. People like Page, deeviousbitch and the others, they're probably making a killing off of their ap sales.

Personally though, even with all that went down, I still think it's worth it. Good for giggles, deving and meeting other adults.

I think you are right, Chicka. It's the marketing. Somehow people need to be aware, completely, of what the AP pass is Not.

I, like Page, have the AP, and actually only use it for Deving. I don't really chat here much anymore, but I have a lot of neat furniture and outfits that I would not be able to start deriving from if not for the AP.

I think a lot of people had (or may still have) unrealistic ideas of what the AP is. There has to be some way for people to be made completely aware of what it is the AP Provides, and what it does not.

Who knows, maybe a little test before you purchase? Wink I mean, check the little boxes to make sure you understand everything. It's just a thought.

Personally I feel the marketing does come into play. However, at the same time, the content available at this time does not make the pass worth the cost. In the throes of everything, buying an AP during the issues we have at the moment, I feel would be a bad idea.
I bought my wife and my own AP.. we bought it out of curiosity and because we assumed that we would have access to the same type of content that we used to make for the Sims. Had I known what was going to happen, I wouldn't have bothered.
It doesn't matter how you market, or how you say it, the AP without any actual content that appeals to an adult is nothing more than a pass that allows you content to things you probably won't bother with anyways. At least, I should say .. I wouldn't bother with. As it is I don't use my restricted content that much, and the majority of my inventory is GA with the exception of 2 working items.
So.. in summary, the AP regardless of how its marketed - be it with glitter or gold.. if the content isn't there.. then the appeal is lost. If you're honest about what kind of content is ALLOWED for those who purchase the AP - before they buy it.. most won't bother.

My Pass was Purchased around November. At this time the Access Pass was advertised in a way that it currently is not accessible to owners. At the time it was an Adult Content product giving us the ability to FREELY do as we would outside the reach of those "underage".

Yes. I purchased it for MATURE nature in part. Not directly 'cyber secks' ability - but to be able to perhaps play at the idea of it. To tease with my boyfriend, or close friends if I would. To enjoy laughing at the 'adult' end of things on IMVU.

Would I buy it as it is now? No. No I would not. I don't see a difference in it to general IMVU use - besides a lil Boob and Crack action. Anything with actual actions, functions, imagery, or gesturing to true adult ability - is deleted, blocked, taken. I stay rather silent on it. But I feel thefted from in the long run.

Lolli...i posted these links over in the AP discussion about PayPal...
and the only reason I am bringing them here is because I am now curious about the marketing you saw in November 2006 since this is from June of last year!!!

I had discussion with Matt a few months ago...
and he corrected me repeatedly on the AP being an Access Pass and NOT EVER an Adult Pass....trust me...i thought it was an Adult Pass too....

I bought my first one in January 06 for $8....
