I've been asked on quite a few occasions now "How do you make a custom necklace?" So I have made a brief simplified tutorial on how to make the texture and opacity maps to go with a basic "bib" style mesh. If you need more detail on any steps please feel free to ask and I will help clarify it.

How did you make the actual celtic links in the chain? Did you use a brush or did you draw it yourself perhaps with the pen tool?

I have several books on how to create celtic knots. (Hand drawn.) I used those techniques in photoshop with overlaying lines in a basket weave pattern and trimming them to make a fairly short straight knot. I copied and pasted and slightly turned and clipped and played with it till I got the oval sort of shape that forms the opacity layer. I merged all my short segments and cleaned up any odd little areas. Then I used bevel and plastic wrap and a few other things to get the texture... I think... lol. It's been a while since I made that tut. Maybe I'll make a tutorial on how to create celtic knots. (no promises on how quickly.)

Yes the same technique can be applied when making the actual chain around the neck. Smile

Love this simplified tutorial for making a neckalce or chain. I have and use GIMP 2.8, and would like to know if anyone can briefly explain the best way to make a "noise" texture. Thanks much

To add noise in Gimp I believe it's Filters>Noise>RGB Noise or HSV Noise depending on which you like better. The other forms of noise probably won't give you the effect you are looking for. Play around with each and their settings (sliders) to see which you like best.

To those still not sure how to add the name... All I did was picked the font style and size I liked and typed whatever word I wanted in white.

Since text layers in photoshop are not exactly the same as image layers I right clicked the text layer in my layers list and then clicked "Rasterize Text." This will turn the text layer into an image that can be manipulated like any other image layer.

It also loses it's text layer properties... meaning you can't change what it says by typical retyping, you can't change the font size like a text layer and you can't change the font style by selecting the word and resetting the style. So be sure you have it the way you want it before you rasterize.

If you save the white "necklace" on the black "background" it is what you will use for the opacity layer. (this is what cuts the background out of the necklace and leaves only the chain and word.)

Then you copy the white layer and add noise to give it a "diamond bling" effect. Save this as a different named file from your opacity layer. This will be what people actually see as the texture.

These steps are illustrated in my above posts I hope this helped to clear things up.
