THIS THREAD IS FOR THE SOLE INTENTION OF HELPING PEOPLE WHO WISH TO ADD SOUNDS TO THERE PRODUCTS. THIS IN NO WAY SHOULD BE USED TO ADD COPYRIGHTTEN SOUNDS TO PRODUCTS.

here is a tutorial i made really quick, so excuse any sloppiness you see Razz

This tutorial assumes you have some basic knowledge of retexturing, searching for things on the internet, and the ability to read and ask questions.

today, we're going to add sounds to a product. first, you need to have a program that will allow you to convert sound files (wav, mp3, etc.) into .ogg files. not only do .ogg files take up much less space than most other sound files, but so far, they're the only ones compatible on IMVU.

so, after you've used google or yahoo to find the converting program that suits you best, convert your copyright free sounds into .ogg files.

Now, you can add these files to pretty much any item, but today, we're just gonna make a BoomBox.

go to the link below:
http://www.imvu.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=159353

now scroll down and click derive from product.

now, i'm pretty sure you're itching to add your sounds, but it's best if you take care of the texture first. copy and paste the image below into any computer graphics program you have. (i used photoshop)

now make it look like however you want:

also, i think it best that i add, the picture you're using is HUGE. so, and this comes in handy when retexturing other products too, just cut your texture in half:

don't worry, it'll still look pretty much the same in the previewer. but that's not what you came here to learn, is it Wink

ok, click the edit actions tab. now you should see six actions there. these "action" will be either replaced by your sounds, or deleted.

next to the very first action, click where it says "Browse". look for your copyright free sound then press ok. do the same thing a few more times if you have more sounds.

now, if you dont have that many sounds, no problem. just scroll down and click "Delete this Action"

now, there may be one more thing you might want to do. trigger words are what tell these sounds to play. by default, the trigger words for these sounds are track1, track2, etc. soooooo, if you want to, feel free to change the trigger words. it's not that hard. also, type it in the Preview screen to make sure it works right:

Now save, submit, and viola! you've just made your first sound product. Enjoy Very Happy

Feel free to ask me questions if you still dont understand.

A few FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

How do I add sounds to the BoomBox?
I just showed ya Very Happy

What do I use to convert sounds?
I'm not sure. I do it the hard way because I first convert my sounds to wav then use this one program that Adrenalynn333 posted once, but i just can't find it anymore Sad

Can I add that new Kanye West song that just came out?
NO! Absolutely no copyright! I'll even flag you myself if i see this!Evil or Very Mad

Can you calm down please?
Shocked I'm sorry, but I can't emphasize enough how important it is not to break the Copyright Terms.

My Product isn't working! Why?
There are a number of reasons for this. the most common one, however, is that you just submitted your products and cant wait to see it in action. Always wait 24 hours. If it doesnt work after that, then you can start freaking out...

Why can't I play more than one sound at once?
It depends on the product. If you don't mind sounds overlapping, then go for it. However, if you just so happen to be using music, i suggest you put a lil warning on your description page.

Why can't I see anything in the "Edit Actions" tab?
In the previewer, go to Edit at the top and make sure you have a check next to advanced mode. You should see it now.

Why did you make this tutorial?
for many reason. the main one is to help people, but also, i'm evil Twisted Evil

A good program you may want to consider to convert music files is www.dbpoweramp.com

Of course, once again. Don't use copyrighted music files!

ok, derive from a shirt, then go to the edit actions tab. add a new action and click browse to find your ogg file. do this as many time as you need to, because trigger words only work one sound at a time.

I've hit a snag in a concept that I'm working on, and I hope you can help...

No matter what sound format I try (.ogg, .wav, .mp3), I run into this issue: Whenever I add sound to an existing action trigger with animation, it works perfectly in the previewer, but isn't audiable on the finished product (though the animations work). I have taken very special care to "apply changes," save the product file, re-submit the product, and wait 24 hours. Is there some secret trick to turning the sound on in conjunction with animations?

Also, I have noticed that if you have multiple items with the same trigger word for different actions, only one will work, regardless of whether they are the same type (sound or animation) or not. Very annoying.

And while I have your attention, I am having a great deal of trouble removing sound actions from a product for some reason... I will delete EVERYTHING, add them again from scratch, re-submit the product, and some to all of what I deleted will still be there will still be there (Again, I have tried waiting 24 hours).

I would greatly appreciate any help you could spare to prevent me from pulling any MORE of my hair out...

well, as far as workin in the previewer and screwing up as a final product, i have no idea. i would suggest you delete the cfl file that your product uses in the Chat client folder then try again. othr than that, i have no idea what could be wrong.

as for the mutiple actions thing, that can be annoying. however, from the sounds of it, you want to make an item with all the actions have one trigger word. i think, but an not postive, that you might want to get the animations you need on one xaf file.

as for deleteing sounds/actions, that's a new one to me too. maybe some screenies might help with that.

*nods*
At the risk of sounding like someone who's been developing for less than a week (regardless of whether or not it's true), where the heck would I find said "chat client folder?" I've done a bit of digging, and turned up nothing. Is it possibly the "data" folder in the IMVU directory? I refer to defaults, of course, knowing full well that customization abounds on most OS.

Nope. I was trying to make a product that used a sound trigger for the same word that another product used for an animation trigger. Savvy? That way, It would effectively add a sound effect to any item with the same animation trigger word. At this time, however, I no longer see it as possible. So what I did instead was take the individual accessories with the animations and attempted to add sound to their existing action keywords. Seemed like it should have worked, in theory.

But that raises another question...

CAN you add sound into a .xaf file? If so, how? I'm just using the sound option on the triggerable action editor right now.

I'll shoot some screenies if the problem continues... Which winows would be most helpful to cap?

Well, I'm off to go fiddle about with it yet again. Thanks for your help!

well, no, you cant add sounds to xaf files. and unfortunately, you cant stop them either. also, go to the edit actions tab and make sure you delete ALL the previous actions. a screenie of the action tab might help

Well, the new patch cleared up all the problems. My sound/animation trigger products now work 100%! However, I still can't get the other one to delete sound actions...

Ah, well. I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually.

Thanks again for all the help, Tyrone!
