I'm still looking into this, OldHand. I have one other user with issues under Max 2008 and I'm trying to narrow it down.

On the bright side, there's a bug fix for anyone that this IS working for. Check link on post #1 for an update.

My commisserations to the other user. Max2008 is a great program so I'm gutted that mine won't play nice with the exporters.
Will keep everything crossed for a speedy resolution (when you have some free time)

Small update for anyone getting "Failed to Initialize" while launching 3ds Max.

You may need to install the following DLL package from Microsoft:
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)

The front page of this thread has been updated as well.

Fantastic that your developing this, I haven't got it working in either 9 or 2008 yet, but hopefully installing a new HD the weekend and a fresh install will fix a load of problems I've been having.

Great work!!

@DarkIdeas:
If you're getting any errors when launching Max 9 or 2008, can you forward me the messages? I have a sneaking suspicion that some extra DLLs are required for some people, but since all of my test machines have Visual Studio and the Max SDK installed, I can't reproduce the errors that others are seeing. Very Happy

Progress Note: I have the lighting code working in debug mode - just not writing out the values to XML yet. That is, with about 30 mins work I'll have the lighting nodes being written out (for rooms). With another hour, I'll have the cameras and seethrough nodes as well.

Side Note: I contacted Dusty about getting access to the IMVU source code in hopes of compiling a much more robust version - I'll keep this thread up to date with any news.

I also try it on max 9 , it looks like it works , when exporting not problems not errors but . when I try on the previewer , the mesh disappear.. it looks like I am using the wrong Cal 3d .. it may not be your pc or hard drive...

I'd be happy to test your mesh for you, Jaleman, if you want to email me. Do you know the mesh exports correctly (it's skinned properly, has texture coordinates, etc.)?

The zip file at the top should have had the two dlls you need - the DLL that goes in the root of the Max 9 folder and the DLE that goes in the plugins folders. You'll want to make sure you use both of those files together. That is, you can't mix and match my DLE in the plugin folder with IMVU's DLL in the root.

I know it works is a mesh already on the catalog that I made whit max7 , now I opened it on max 9 export it ( different name) and try it to upload it .. it export fine , no errors , but on the previewer it disappear..
it has to be the OP system on my pc .. I am using your exporters for max 9
even whit the path from Microsoft, some times I get that error to fail initialize the cal3d dll .. some time i don`t..

ner , can you please check on your root folder of max 9 , how many cal 3ds you have there?
I have cal3d 100 and the one you have on the zip... if I deleted the 100 and when I try to save the root node.. max 9 say , it can save that un known file (XSF).
so if I use the cal 3d 100 and the other file you provide "cal3d-exporter.dle " for the plugins, it work fine, but that`s the reason why in the previewer the mesh disappear. .....for max 7 it use a different cal ;not the 100.

I think you may have another cal3d in that folder..
I am using Windows XP....

PS:....Does it work for any one , this cal 3 d for max 9? ( beside Ner)

I only have one DLL in my root folder of Max 9 and only one file in my plugins folder - just the two from my zip file. Everything works fine for me on loading max and on exporting.

Here's my info and some tests to help troubleshoot:

My version of the plugins:
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 9\cal3d_d.dll (version 0.10.0.0)
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 9\plugins\cal3d_max_exporter_DL3D.dle (version 0.10.0.0)

IMVU plugins from c:\3dsmax7:
(I'm not sure which previewer these came from)
c:\3dsmax7\cal3d.dll (no version info)
C:\3dsmax7\plugins\cal3d_max_exporter.dle (version 0.9.1.0)

I had once tested the WorldViz Cal3d exporters, but they didn't produce IMVU compatible files so I quickly deleted them (I hope).

Test 1 - all 4 files:
I put both of IMVU's files into my Max 9 folders alongside my files (they have different filenames).
When launching max 9 I get "DLL <IMVU DLE> is not made for this version of the program - not loading"
That all makes sense to me.

Test 2 - both IMVU files and only my DLE:
I get two errors: one about the wrong version (same as above) and one about "DLL <my DLE> failed to initialize. Error code: 126 - The specified module could not be found."
That all makes sense to me.

Test 3 - only the IMVU DLE, both of my files:
Error while launching - "DLL <IMVU DLE> failed to initialize. Error code: 126 - The specified module could not be found."
My plugin seems to still load ok. That makes sense to me.

Test 4 - only the IMVU DLL (no plugin), both of my files:
No errors while launching. Export seems to work fine using my plugin.
That makes sense to me.

So all of my "tests" of moving DLLs around works as I'd expect - but not getting what you're getting.

Hi ner,

I apriciate your efforsts. I have tested your plugin on both the versions of MAX. Max 9 and 2008.

I got same error for both. I have attached the image for your perusal. I hope it will help you to do some thing.

I am sure the different path of max folder is not the probelm. Cause I have installed many plugins for max in same directory.

I have also donloaded VS2005 pack but no luck. I hope you can do some magic. Wink

Nothing firm yet, no. I got sidetracked with making meshes for my wife and planting *more* grass in my backyard (and everything that goes with that). I think it's safe to say that regardless of how good/bad of a developer I am, I'm a worse gardener Smile

I have my suspcions the errors are related to missing DLLs - maybe something for C++ with Visual Studio version 2008 which is what I used to compile.

I've updated the first page to include a new link to try. If anyone tries this, please let me know if it works or doesn't work.
Here's the same link that I added to the first page:
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86)

On the gooder bedder side:
I have another similar project going on that I *hope* to get to this week. It should bring about a much nicer, fuller - and working Razz - version of a plugin.

Worst case, I'll have to see what it takes to make a real setup program for a C++ application - something that would automatically install all the proper DLLs. I've created such setups for C# applications, but haven't made one with C++.
