How do you open a product in 3ds Max to derive from it?
I want to change/remove/add objects from a product ... how do you get the mesh and maps and textures into 3ds Max?
If Max is not for this ... how do you CHANGE stuff as above??
Thanks in advance,

You can't take an existing mesh and open it in max unless it is something provided on the IMVU developer pages such as female weighting, chair, couch etc.
Meshes are compressed in the .cfl file for asset protection (and to maximize performance)
Max is a good program for creating meshes however you have to create new ones.
You can edit textures of any derivable mesh in any graphics program. Many meshes utilize different texture maps with opacities so that components can be made to seem invisible thus changing the overall look of an item. (KittenKat's Any Length Boots are a good example of this - opacity map can be used to change boot length)

You cannot edit a mesh unless it is one of the meshes provided from IMVU on the developer pages.
Any mesh created by a member is locked up in the .cfl file and unless you find a developer who will just hand you their 3d model, you cannot access it. _________________

so then you cannot build a variation on any product except IMVU's (except for for textures) ??
if you want to do a variation of a product you need to start from scratch or approach the dev? |

Correct.
As I stated, the meshes (3d models) are compressed in the .cfl files for security and stability.
Meshers work very hard on products and simply do not hand out models for free.
Do be careful when making a variation on someone's mesh. While there are many similar products it is wise to vary something enough so as to not be a clone which is in bad form. _________________

thanks for your quick replies
i guess i won't be bothering with much "developing" here then ... except for "painting" things ... lol
I am a programmer .. used to open environments where code is reused and enhanced.
