So, I've been looking at a few derivable skins, and simply wish for a little help regarding the topic. If a skin is derivable does that mean you can use the texture provided for use? Because many of these derivable skins, do not supply a skin texture. So I'm slightly confused, as to how they're any different to the original '000 '?
Do they simply allow you to resubmit the exact same skin texture? That seems unlikely to me and completely unoriginal.
And if you can use the textures how to you get them? Correct me if I'm wrong but I assumed that the textures were provided to be used as a base/reference?
I've been using the IMVUinc. Files to help with skin developing and learning the tools etc. However I'm curious about these derivable skins.
Sorry if I sound dumb. I've known the basics of developing for quite some time, however recently I've been hoping to put it into action. I will continue to create my own skin files from scratch till I'm happy with the result i get enough to publish it. But curious about these skins.

I think it's childish. I've also seen someone make a derivable skin, and she even provided the actual 256x256 texture on the product page. This is somewhat copying the style of the creators who make meshes (clothes, furniture) and provide their template for developers who want to derive from that product, but in an unsuccessful manner.
From what I know, you are allowed to derive from a product and use its textures without changing any of them, since the original creator is also credited through each sale.
You won't see big names providing their skin texture for free to be derived from. Everyone in their right mind knows that people steal, claim work as their own, and you would end up having to DMCA a lot of people because you would see your "free for deriving from my skin texture" on people's work and not derived from the skin your provided them with.
Other people leave it derivable just to be derived from (probably to boost up their tiers, but even if this is the case, derivable skins are not successful because other creators derive directly from IMVU's product).
There are a lot of skins, a lot of talented developers that create skins. Some of them have their own hidden skin template, and each time they create a skin, they derive from their own, and this is also to add points to their tier level. _________________
If they provide you textures then you should be allowed to use them, however, I personally would not. Firstly, I just don't trust this. I feel like I might be setting myself up to get DMCA'd against. Secondly, when someone provides you with textures, there is no reason you actually have to derive from their product. They are simply giving away a free texture there in hopes you make skins for them that they can profit from. _________________ PM me a dank meme and get a free gift!
Some may accidentally mark it derivable. If they do provide the texture, that might be a stolen one, but maybe they are just trying to rack up derived sales.
If you do see a texture posted like that, I would leave it be. Better to make your own than to recolor. It looks fishy if you have a skin that a lot of people already have too.
And I should add that deriving from your own products does not rack up on points. Maybe it did in the past, but I am sure the tier level thread will confirm it has to be another account. _________________ Goodbye Forums. I only just began to know you.
