How to make a couch in Blender 2.45?

Hi I was wondering if anyone can help me make a couch with blender and export it, I know how to model one, but I dont know how to put nodes or use the avatars nor am I sure how i'm supposed to get it into creator mode. I've tried looking at some tutorials but they are not very easy for me to grasp, or they are using 3ds max, and since I do not have 3ds max it doesn't really help me. All your answers will be very much appreciated, thank you
