|
|
Hi. I don't know how many of you will remember, but on more than one occassion, I had trouble loading my avatar picture because the file size was too big. Everyone was so sweet to respond and help me out, but I just couldn't get it no matter how much I tried without losing too much of the quality.
Well, I finally figured it out! Unfortunately this is for photoshop users, but if you do have Gimp, maybe you can figure out from my directions on how to do so from reading along here.
In photoshop, instead of saving your image the "normal" way...
1. File > Save For Web
2. Select the JPEG option (this is for non-animated images only)
3. Move the slider down until you begin to notice loss in quality. You can normally do this quite a bit before you lose any at all.
4. Click on save.
And that's it! There were other ways that I had seen when looking into this matter but this is the quickest and easiest way to do so, I think. Now, I can go back to making pretty avatar images with more detail if and when I find the time to change them.
Hope this is helpful for all of y'all out there. I know that I had really wanted to figure this out for a while so I thought I would post it for anyone else who needed to know. _________________

It's nice of you sharing this. I've just discovered that recently while I was doing some animated catalog icons. I hope the comunity finds it useful. _________________

Thanks guys.
I had asked and asked and asked about reducing my file image in the forums. LOL. Lots of people helped, but didn't really know what to do. Everything they tried either made the file look like poopy or left the file too big. One dev did some work on her own for me just out of the kindess of her heart but the quality was just lost too much as well.
So, I searched and found htis little gem and thought I would post it just in case. It might not get a lot of replies on this topic but hopefully it will come up in a search if someone searches it.
So I thought I would post this. _________________

A mod can move it if they want to. I Just wanted to put it out there.
Most people won't have this problem, but I do a lot of things with background images such as layer effects and filter effects, paintbrushes, gradients, etc. so it adds up pretty quick. I almost always end up having to fnd a way to downsize my files on here. LOL. _________________

I think it should stay in this forum and let it be noted that ALL TEXTURES should be saved using the "Save For Web & Devices" function, there are so many sliders and settings there you can get fantastic looking textures and at the same time keep your kb size low ... also as well as playing with JPG settings, experiment with saving opacities and things as PNG-8s, sometimes they work out better.

One of the best ways tonot lose any quality is to use the *hiresnobg trigger in the chat client. This will take a good background-less picture of well over 2000x2000px and save it to your desktop. This picture will be in .png (portable network graphic) format. Now .PNGs have a much better resolution quality than the traditional .jpeg (.jpg)s and save better without losing much of the resolution. Now commonly these HiRes shots are 72ppi (pixels per inch) but that can be modified to be much greater. In GIMP the maximum ppi you can make images is 65,536 and in Photoshop it is 9,999.99. You can change the maximum resolution quality (ppi) in the preferences in both programs.
Using GIMP as an example, since the ppi resolution is much higher than Photoshops, just create a new image of 160x220 and set the x and y resolutions to 65536ppi. Then when you have the new image, open your HiRes shot as a new layer and resize it accordingly to make it look sweet. Do all the sweet editations to the picture that you wish and then export it as a .png using a compression of 9. Saving as a .png instead of a .jpg will keep its resolution and quality a lot better. Granted a .png file is slightly larger in size than a .jpg; but that just carries over to a higher quality picture... And given that IMVU now allows up to 400kb as the maximum allowed for a Ava Picture...one should have no problem with a static .png image. _________________ SEND ME A PRIVATE MESSAGE IF YOU WANT THE ANTI-VIP BADGE!
