|
|
Anyone been to Pula, Croatia? What should I do there when I go on holiday? I have two full days. Plus a few hours here and there.
Hopefully I'll be able to spend a couple of hours on a beach somewhere, I would like to swim a bit.
Mainly I'm there for the "experience" and not so much "doing nothing".
The friend I am going with is Veggie, so need to consider that for food.
I know NO Croatian. Don't even know how they pronounce their vowels or consonants. I speak English and a little German, which I know is a locally spoken language due to the German tourists.
GIVE ME ALL THE ADVICE! _________________

What is your budget to spend? If you going for cheap budget in Pula forget about it you will get the usual tourist treatment, otherwise find a friend that lives there that knows the routes and places. Verudela Beach Resort is where usually tourist hang out if you have limited budget. Don't worry for the language people speak English too. _________________ -

Hello, my dear wife!
I know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy, and he was able to get by in that area of the world just fine on English alone. However, he was also scammed when trying to visit some ruins in Croatia. At least, I think it was Croatia where that happened. If you're planning to see ruins, I would advise you to stick with boring, hand-holding tourist groups even if it is less adventurous.
Also, is your friend vegetarian in the sense that she eats absolutely no meat, or is she willing to have fish? I'm sure there's plenty of good seafood in Croatia considering their location.
Other than that, I have absolutely no idea. I don't think I could even point out Croatia on a map. I just know it's near Italy and by the sea. |

My friends and I spent a few days in Pula last year and it was awesome! There's SOOO much history to soak in there and the architecture is gorgeous. Local food is pretty yummy too, although their local wines are hardcore!
A lot of hotels have these 1-3 day tours that you can book for all sorts of things like going to the Brijuni islands (stunning), Plitvice (can't recall how to spell it) lake - that's really gorgeous to swim in and just see all the waterfalls, the Postojna caves that have stalagmites and stalactites and there's a 1hour tour that you must do of the Venetian Fort. It's got some pretty crazy/fascinating history. The ruins and gates of Hercules are also pretty exciting. There's the "ruins" of Twin Gates that's pretty cool.
When we were there last year, there was a festival of light, that had the entire place up and partying at night. There's all sorts of festivals happening there. If you can take a local bus into Rovinj. It's almost like a fairy tale town.
If you're going to be spending time on the beach, you HAVE to try the scuba diving or snorkeling. There are a few sunken WW2 submarines and a ton of ships that really exciting to peek at.
When are you planning on going there? I went in July-August and found the weather to be pretty good. The weather can be pretty unpredictable at times, with very hot mornings and chilly evenings.
You can get quite a bit of Vegetarian food in the form of pastas, pizza's tapas and the occasional stir fry. Taste wise they're okay, you'd love the seafood and its dirt cheap!
Hope this helps and have a fabulous holiday! _________________ You laugh because I’m different, I laugh because you’re all the same. |

People will scam you everywhere, if you yourself know some yourself thats it, chances are very small to get scammed. With third hand people that you dont know yourself that will happend.I been in Zagreb and Dubrovnik had fun but did spend a little because was to enjoy it anyhow. If money is not the problem one can enjoy fully, otherwise a friend that knows the city/surrounding is the best option if you want to see most of stuff and save. _________________ -

Thank you for all this info!
We only have two full days in Pula and so we can't go exploring very far. Those waterfalls are far D:
I really want to see the Brijuni Islands! They look AMAZING!
Snorkelling would be awesome but I'm not sure how to go about organising that, or if we would have time. I'd love to see sunken vessels! As long as they aren't too deep XD
I've heard there are lots of ruins within the town to see, so that's good. Think we might want to rent a bike. Not sure.
We are going in August.
I wish we had more time there! _________________

Hey there! You're most welcome! I hope you have a fabulous trip. Pula is such a gorgeous place. If you love history and really fascinating ancient architecture, you'll fall in love with the place.
Don't be discouraged by the duration, there is a LOT you can do in those two days. Most things are pretty close by and either with their local transport or even a bicycle (VERY fun) you can explore quite a bit.
You'll love Brijuni. The islands are so tiny, yet each one offers you an entirely different experience and the tours range from 3hrs to a whole day. Pay in KUNA and NOT Euros otherwise you're going to get ripped off.
When we did our scuba diving, there was a company at the Dock that also made use of a "Iron Man" suit thingybob - where you were a regular bathing costume and have your head in this giant fish bowl like helmet that gets air pumped into it. You can walk around the coral and even submerge yourself quite easily. I didn't find it claustrophobic at all. It's also cheaper and easier to do than Scuba diving. You can do basic snorkelling, although getting down to the depths would be impossible - you'd still see some amazing fish and a few of the wrecks sticking out.
We rented bicycles for most of our stay, there's a nice place outside the Youth Hostel with really great mountain bikes. There are also Day Scooters/Vespa's that you can rent, although we found they were harder to maneuver around the city.
Pula has HEAPS of ruins. There's an awesome Castle that you HAVE to see. Tour was about 40 minutes and REALLY makes you feel like you are back in medieval times! _________________ You laugh because I’m different, I laugh because you’re all the same.

You're going to love it! I did see a few of the locals riding bikes around the islands, but I'm not sure if you can rent bikes once you get there...
I asked a friend of mine who's there about Veg food and she mentioned a Thai restaurant that's close to the Arena. They server amazing veg dishes that are somewhat cheap. _________________ You laugh because I’m different, I laugh because you’re all the same. |
