What the different between grey opacity colour and white ?

Gray will make your texture become translucent with blending enabled in CM. White is like not having any opacity.

gray will make the texture transparent and white will make the texture solid no transparancy

'CM' = Create Mode

In Max when you put grey as opacity it will turn the mesh into transparency. In Create Mode you have to tick blending to be able to see the transparency.

Of cource.
