That's the thing. That's OUR world, Earth circa post Industrial Revolution. Here "Magic" Was what we called things we couldn't describe until now. But even here "Mysticism" is separated from Logical Science.
The same physical traits of earth, don't apply to Sigil the City of Doors where you can open into a world made completely of water or a world completely of fire.
You have Spell Jammers, where you toss a powerful magical item in the engine to travel space (or in some cases a Mage.)
While Mages and Wizards have to LEARN magic, Some people just know it.
Then you have to go into divisions: Arcana, Natural, Divine, Planar, and Psionic (Telekinetic and such.)
Arcana or Arcane magic CAN be explained by science in most settings because well, that's what wizards try to do, categorize magic. It is the Science of Magic. But in most settings where this occurs, Magic just "is."
Natural is derived from Nature and elements (NOT ALCHEMICAL!!!)
Divine comes from Deities.
Planar is a smoosh of everything but taps into 1 side of the planes (Astral Plane, Elemental Plane of Fire, Elemental Plane of Air etc.)
And Psionics are the magics of the mind.
That's the "logic" if you will to magic, it's just categorized into nice neat pockets.
Mercedes Lackey has several books where magic exists during the modern times, not just swords and slashers, but Victorian ladies, because Magic isn't just a convenient explanation for the inexplicable.
Also you have to take that quote in the context of what we are talking about. When it comes to magical races, there is no logic. One magical blood dominates the other. A Half elf is a Half elf is a Half Elf, because Fae blood dominates human blood. Dilution will occur in say Plane touched, because the farther from that plane the weaker the magic, that is why Tieflings, Genasi, and Asimar are a stabilized species from 1 demonic, celestial or elemental ancestor. They dwell on the Prime Material, not the Element there parents came from.
In that sense, the logic of "Genetics" Does not apply to magic. Magic can twist the DNA any which way the setting seems fit. That is why Fantasy is convenient for those idiots who claim halves of halves of halves of halves. |
I like how you quoted the D&D players/DM handbooks. however if one does look into it even the planes are governed by the laws of physics and logic, even the gods in DnD apply to this.
Yes creation of the spells is at no cost and from reading your post that is what you seem to give to no logic.
Yes my 10th level sorcerer may be able to cast a fireball with nothing ill affecting him but that fireball would still be created by the logic reasons.
one such scenario may be that the air in the selected area is concentrated and forced to move rapidly as to cause a spark, now thanks to basic science we all know that high concentration of Oxygen is highly flammable. and with a type of control of less flammable air the mage could then create a ball and throw it. thus logic amid what looks like chaos. _________________ Just like the honey badger I give no...... |

Yes, exactly. The laws of physics and logic still can apply to some basic degree. _________________

Depends on the DM, the Setting, The world, and what ever you want.
That's the same thing that affects OTHER games.
DnD Follows SOME Physics, but only as far as the DM wants to take it.
Page 42 I think of the PHB or DM's Guide states something this: These are more like guidelines and suggestions. The point of this is for you to have fun.
The same applies there to real word physics.
If that really applied, 2e Spell Jammer's would have to have a shielding to travel through vacuum. Same for Treasure Planet. Where's the Force Field to keep you from turning into a shriveled husk with blood leaking out your eye sockets.
And again I was pointing out about the RACIAL bit. Please read the entire thing before assuming. I am not pulling this off topic further.
The last bit puts it in context of THIS THREAD'S TOPIC. Racial Magic does not follow Genetic Logic, because it is MAGICAL. That's the Explanation for it. End of off topicness please. End of misconstruding and misquoting me based on only 13 bits of my post. Thank you. (Misquoting IS against forum regulations.) |

Dislikes
Gods and Goddesses would have to be my least favorite characters to play with. 'I can hurt you, but you can't hurt me' is a common theme I see with these.
Demons or Angels These generally are more people I see guilty of running god mods and refusing to take any hits. I get not taking death blows - but taking no damage ever.... while choosing to fight and being fully capable of killing or hurting the other person is god modding.
Vampires or wereanimals - again, when played as something that cannot take hits..... or heals just that fast after each blow. Occasionally I run across ones I really enjoy being around.
Favorites...
Elves - in general. Too many different types, and too many different forms to list, but generally I love messing with that species(?).
Drow Being a sub-race of elf but holding a special place for me - I don't mind either the 'good' or 'bad' drow being played.
That said...Semi-Rant about drow: I recognize that Drizzt was (one of?) the first that made it big, but he was certainly not the first of the 'good' drow and it mildly annoys me that people automatically pick him out as the reason for there being 'good' drow. I think the fact the gods Eilistraee, J’imasro (goddess of order), Lothlonglathe' (Goddess of Justice Bravery and Truth) exist and had existed prior to his creation prove Drow walk both sides of the fence and have for a long time.
(I think my one peeve with some of the Drow RPers however is I see them referring to Drow from the forgotten realms in the plural as 'Drows' - it's like deer, you don't say deers when referring to the animal, you say deer... at least that's what all my reading so far has indicated - if anyone else that based out of FR/D&D lore has noted anything different the insight would be welcome... as I am referring to the ones pulling from that.)
Normal Humans. Not just humanoids, but full I-have-no-magic humans, though they often don't survive because I do play them as being slower and not having all the insight a non-human would have. Which means they lack the speed to escape a lot of the fighting unless they see it coming. Sad but true.
Love/Hate:
Sidhe, or Fey of any sort. Done right they can be amazing, done poorly they're just another air-headed creature with no real depth. 'Real' Sidhe or Fey aren't going to be granting wishes if caught, you'll be lucky and happy if they chose to do so, and sorely hurting or dead if they take offense to being cornered, much less captured if they get a chance to strike back.
Anthros... I've met a few that're awesome at RP, but a lot of them make it a point that they don't belong in the RP rooms and chose to play it as if they're real world and shatter the atmosphere of a room by talking OOC like it's IC.
Truthfully back in 2002 or somewhere close to that was when I rolled Manathayria up and figured out what abilities she was to have along with her back story. She originated as an anti-magic, anti-godmod character. To this day my Drow's abilities are centered around the idea that her and the Drow she was raised by were a sort of 'chosen' of the gods of magic to destroy a mage-artifact in the Underdark. I actually have her bio written out somewhere on my page I think... playing her is an interesting balancing act due to her nature as a character built to piss off god-moders as 'legally' as possible without breaking into being one myself. I may actually have it posted on the bios section here too... |

There's a difference between some of the Anthropomorphs of IMVU and people playing an Anthropomorphic character.
I play some Anthropomorphic characters, but they're not me.
And I like Anthropomorphic characters, they can be fun to play around, as long as the player doesn't make the character's whole point to be "I'M A KITTY PERSON" There needs to be more development than that. _________________ END DISCRIMINATION AGAINST NON-VIP MEMBERS! I spent money on IMVU too! and I have just as much right to create as they do!

Oh, my God! Yes!
There are people who actually get disappointed in me because I keep all of Dracula's limitations from the original novel 1897.
One person even told me "If you let a human defeat Dracula or block his thoughts from Dracula or resist being enthralled by Dracula than you REALLY don't get Dracula." My response was "Do you know who Professor Van Helsing is? Have you read the novel?" Dracula is defeated by an elderly man who can resist Dracula's psychic influences and happens to know his weaknesses. _________________
